Mice Inside My Santa Fe by suecoff

I purchased my Santa Fe new and have owned it for two years. Within the past two weeks I have discovered mice inside the vehicle - the evidence being a chewed up puppy bed on the back seat. I am the only user of this car so I know there has never been any food consumed in this car, hence, no crumbs or other goodies to attract mice. The puppy bed has been removed and a trap set. One mouse was caught, one eluded the trap, and there are new 'signs' that another mouse has been there. The car is immaculate inside and out. We've searched the engine to see if they're making a home there. That too was immaculate.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any idea how or where they're getting in? Any suggestions on what to do?

Food isn't necessarily a requirement if they are just looking for a nesting place, although some rodents seem to like the taste of insulation on the wiring.

Downy fabric sheets were recommended in this thread from the archives:

I have had mice, squirrels and raccoons in my summer home, but no vermin in my car. Raccoons are the worst. Mice like to make nests and used the dog bed to remove the soft material to do so. They chewed up a bed to make a nest. For mice use glue traps. My suggestion is don't drive with the traps in the car. They may shift and get stuck some where and are hard to remove.

While I have not had mice in my auto, I did have them in my trailer after being stored for a winter. Scattering a liberal number of dryer sheets throughout the trailer got rid of them and by repeating the process every fall and leaving the sheets in the trailer over the winter, I have never had the problem again. It seems mice can't stand the smell of dryer sheets. I used Bounce but I am sure store brands would work just as well. Good luck
