Article comments for Full Test: 2007 BMW X5 4.8i - For the new-generation 2007 BMW X5 4.8i, the Germans have just gone straight ahead with their whole bodged-together formula for a midsize truck/tall wagon/extended-roof line thingie, and the result is more of everything — more space, more seats and more engine. | Why the off-road evaluation/comparison? If you want to go offroad get a Jeep. If you prefer to smoke other pavement players, get a BMW. | |
This is outrageous...70,000 for an SUV that's hardly improved from the previous model?? I would have a had time shelling out 60-65 grand for a new escalade even though it matches the performace of the land rover supercharged while maintaining its truck persona and bling bling appeal...I'd rather have a 550i

Replying to: rkecseg (Apr 10, 2007 2:07 pm) Also note that the previous X5 4.8is (fully loaded) had an MSRP of around $73,000, which is just as expensive as a fully loaded X5 4.8i. They both have basically the same engine, but the new vehicle offers significant upgrades in features for about the same price. So there is precedent for the new X5's $70,000 price tag when you compare comparable vehicles. If you're only looking at performance, remember that this comparison test was done on a brand new vehicle. Performance tends to improve over the first 10,000 miles and also depends on things like temperature and the skill of the driver. So it should be no surprise that this vehicle was slightly slower than BMW's published numbers. The new X5 4.8i (350 hp) will be marginally quicker than the old 4.4i (315 hp), but it is slower than the old 4.8is (355 hp) mostly because it's heavier (upgraded suspensions, new comfort features, and bigger chassis add weight). |
