Nice looking, but hopefully not one you want to see with lights flashing in your rear view mirror! Tell us what you think of the follow up test.

I worked on police cars for almost 23 years. After I read this article,I wish I was still working on them. The guy mentions a '69 Dodge Polara. The fastest car I worked on was a '70 Plymouth Gran Fury with the 440,and 375 horsepower. It was almost the same car mentioned in the article.I had fun with the test drive after I worked on it.Thanks for the article.

Crown Vic over Charger by ethanwest

Being the proud new owner of a 2000 Crown Vic Police Interceptor (ex Santa Barbara County Sheriff, California) my loyalties are with Ford on this one. I think if Ford just put more power into their Police Interceptor, some votes would be shifted back there way. The Charger also has quite short front and rear overhangs which I would imagine would make the car less durable in terms of car to car contact.

I really like the idea of a Dodge Charger cop car, and apparently, so do the cops. Dodge will also get some much needed revenue with this car. Good Job Dodge

I believe the Pontiac G8/Holden Commodore would make a better cop car than the Dodge, it is roomier, proven to withstand abuse, and more powerful in V8, with a nice V6 available.

I have your answer, but I don't think you will like it.The Motor Trend april '07 issue has the comparison between the Crown vic and the Charger. Here are some specs.

         Crown Vic - Charger
    MSRP 35,445 - 30,480
    Eng. HP 250 - 340
    0-60 7.8 - 5.6
    0-80 12.9 - 9.4
 1/4 mile 15.9/88.1 - 14.2/99.4

The Charger also has stability and traction control.I would say the Charger is the better choice. The Crown Vic is A good police car and did well, but I think the Charger will take over. When I was working on the Police cars, the Mopars were my favorite.

My Dept. just bought 3 Chargers with the HEMIS and ordered 4 with the V-6. Well, that was a waste of money. We are only 5 square miles. Hit the gass to hard and you rocket into another city. Actually, the car is fast! I wish I had this engine in my CV. The biggest problem that we have faced is our mechanic can't figure out how to disconnect the rear window from lowering. So, his solution was to disconnect it entirely. We can't even put the rear window down from the drivers control area. Also, Dodge needs to add a key lock on the passengers side door. Nothing like trying to stuff a bad guy in the car and then have to drag 'em around to the drivers side and unlock the door.

I read on the internet that the rear windows and rear door handles are disabled.I worked on police cars for 23 years and that how our cars were.As far as the V6 Charger, it has the same speed as the CV and stops better. So you didn't lose anything there. As for the Hemi you gained big time. The Hemi Cherger matches the numbers for what was called one of the fastest police cars the 69-70 Dodge Polara, and Plymouth Fury 440.One of the first police cars I worked on was the 70 Plymouth Fury 440.I can tell you that car was fast.I like to hear how the Charger holds up. I would of loved working on those Hemi's.But now retired.
