#1 of 15 1999 Chevy S10 Pickup Rattling
by 21b2
Feb 28, 2007 (4:29 am)
Year, make and model - (99 Chevy S10)
Engine size (V.6)
Manual or automatic transmission (Auto trans)
Mileage (115240)
(2WD)
The truck runs great except between about 45mph-60mph. At that point there is a rattling that sounds like its coming from the dash, and below the floor (feels kinda like your in the run gear in a manual). But outside that mph range,Any Ideas?
(Ride quality issue, more then a driveability issue, other then this, the truck runs very smooth)

If the rattle sounds like it's in the top out side corners of the dash - it might be the hood hinges rattling - these is a TSB on this at least for 2K - 2K2 years .. They add a spring washer in the hinge ..

I own a 1999 S10 and it rattles very loudly at idle and below 10mph. I found the catalytic converter to be the cause. More specifically, the internals of the converter were "rattling" around inside of it causing the noise.

My problem with a 94 S10 (257K-km is it's rattling too much, can't tell exactly where it's coming from, sounds like a lose metal cover from the exhaust system. The noise gets worse when I accelerate.
My second problem is every time I turn, I am having a hard time controlling the vehicle back, steering veers and hardens, it also happens sometimes during normal driving.
The ABS light stays on and there is noise from the engine when I go over bumps and humps or when I embark/disembark the truck.Could it be suspension ?? nd If so anybody knows how much it may cost to fix ???
Pliz pliz help

Congratulations on the longevity of your S-10. Your must have done a good job on keeping routine maintenance up.
The rattling noise could be the heat shield on the catylitic converter has come loose. If its a rumbling/ grumbling sound it could be something vibrating against the underneath structure such as a broken tail pipe hanger, a broken shock, a broken motor mount. Is the noise intermittent or constant?
The steering problem could be several things including ball joints, center link, tie rod ends. Are your tires showing uneven wear?
The ABS light could be a faulty wheel sensor or bad connection.
There is no way of knowing how much to fix with out knowing what's broke. Take it to a shop and get an estimate. Or get out your jack stands and tool box. The nice part about having and old truck is you don't have to be particular.
#6 of 15 rattling - heat shield strap/bracket

Our '99 S-10 (4wd manual) has a wicked rattle that has been narrowed down to a missing strap/bracket from the heat shield. With only 1 of 2 straps in place... it rattles like a German tank.
On another note, we just sold our '88 (2wd manual) a week ago with 303K on it. Regular oil changes and minor parts replaced over the years; nothing bigger than the water pump in 7 years. We live in a city that has emissions testing and the truck passed easily each year. I've met 2 people with the same vintage s-10 with over 400K on the odometer. Great little trucks! (Expect more KM out of yours panache.)
(The only reason we sold was the screaming deal we got on a pretty blue '94 s-10 with low-low kms!)

I have a loud rattle in the center of my 2002 Chevy S10 ZR2. It is very loud and sounds like cards in the spokes of a bike. It is constant and only quiet when the vehicle is in neutral. What is it and how do i fix it....cost? Any help would be great.

Sometimes the catylitic converter's heat shield becomes loose when the spot welds fail. When this happens it creates a terrible racket.
