There are high-voltage cables running along the right-hand frame rail interior. Could be if you were involved in an accident, the step bars might be hit and cause damage to the cables since they mount adjacent to them. There could be a fire. If that happens the lawyers might show up.

As times are hard, I am certain they would be more than willing to take your money, unless they fear liability.
Maybe you don't need the one on the right-hand side of the car.
That would be alright. Except for the overall cost.
The thing of it is, there MIGHT be a problem in a collision. If you never get into collisions then everything will be fine. Right?

Running boards, Nerf bars, are patently useless on a Mariner except for dirtying your pant leg every time you step over/around them and into the car. Rather than get your wife PO'ed every time you come home with dirty/muddy pant legs why not lower the Mariner instead....??

Lowering springs also provide visual enhancement plus add more stability against rollover. And while you're in there add wheel spacers and wider wheels/tires to increase stability even more and get more roadbed traction to boot.

Oh, contact remcotowing.com for an axle-lock so you can uncouple the front drive capability, "wire" the rear driveline clutch CLOSED and now have a safe, truly SAFE, RWD hybrid SUV. You can easily revert to (PART-TIME) 4WD if needed by manually "recoupling" the front halfshaft, opening the rear clutch "wire" modification, and then putting the system in "auto" 4WD mode.

Availability of RWD only "mode" would also allow you to use the FULL MEASURE of regenerative braking even in the winter. Assuming you were willing to bypass the OAT sensor that "triggers" the reduction in regenerative braking ability as the OAT declines.
