i have a roof rack (complete with dealer-installed crossbars) in my CX-9 GT AWD. Does anyone have a recommendation on a good cargo box (Yakima, Thule, inno, etc.) that is easy on the budget but is durable and easily attaches to the roof rack? i am not the most DIY-saavy guy so ease-of-installation is important. Just want enough room to carry a few extra things for long trips/vacations. Thanks! Replying to: jcpharm (Jul 22, 2009 7:41 am) You probably won't hear this recommendation from others, but we've been hugely pleased with Kanga's Hurricane carrier. It's a soft but weatherproof carrier, and comes in 11 and 14 cu. ft. models. We've had ours for over ten years and we favour it over the popular rigid products for a number of reasons: It's more aerodynamic, quieter on the highway, load flexible, and when you're not using it, you can just pack it right back into its box, taking up little room in the garage or at destination. The other advantage to it is that the manufacturer provides straps and brackets to allow installation on vehicles with or without roof racks. As our CX-9 and former Pathfinder had roof racks, we just strapped both ends quickly to the cross members and hit the road. Ours also has a folding, semi-rigid base that goes inside of the hurricane, and prevents any possibility of cargo damage to the roof. In short, adaptable, just like the CX-9. Hope this helps. Replying to: rabadash (Jul 22, 2009 5:46 pm) thanks rabadash! i wasn't even looking at soft cases....are they durable? my concern is that stuff could shift weight easily and throw off the center of gravity of the car in motion moreso than with a rigid. any other opinions out there? Replying to: jcpharm (Jul 23, 2009 12:42 pm) I don't think you need to worry about that. They strap down pretty tight. I have a soft top carrier and the biggest issue I have with it is that if you are taking a trip and need to stay overnight at a hotel, they are easily broken into with a utility knife. You can, of course, unload the whole thing, but that takes time. Outside of that though, I like all the advantages mentioned above.

Replying to: mindleftnumb (Jul 30, 2009 12:16 pm) The factory hitch has 2 1/4" opening. After-market hitches have 3" opening. Most bike racks come with adapters for 2 1/4->3 or vice versa. Factory hitch only comes with TOW package (unless you ask dealer to order the part and install it at dealers). The factory hitch is more expensive (~$200). However, aftermarket hitches can be had for $150 shipped. Installation only takes about 30 minutes with torque wrench. The factory hitch is better integrated within the bumper. If you already have the side rails... and previous yakima accessories... then for sure go for the low rider towers.
