I don't know how profit was measured for the purposes of that issue nor do I know who figured it. Recent past is often a very good indicator of near future in lots of things, maybe cars too. The company my dad worked for used to plan for 5 years of losses before a store would turn its first dime of profit. They spent something like 20 years in one metropolitan area before that area made a profit. My question is are they supposed to be turning a profit at this point? But you haven't addressed my question of how does this affect the point that the Smart car would make a perfect second commuter car. The Smart will get its U.S. chance when it is offered for sale in the U.S. We'll have to wait and see how it does. Assuming it will flop, I guess you'll blame it on marketing or something other than the car itself.
