Great video. Now does anyone know of other head to head comparisons. I'd like to get about 6 cars I'm interested in out to the same hill.

What vehicles?

Oh - on the manual 4x4 - the thing turns out to have no low-range. So it's like 4wd high only, which is actually a world better than AWD, but it's not goign to really cut it for serious off-road(though trails, snow, and such should be fine)

price and options by twain

The Patriot I want is about 18k. That's a FWD with air, cruise , power etc. I don't want the CVT and I don't need 4WD. Like other posters, all I've seen so far is well over 20k with CVT and 4WD. No thanks.

Jeep has an appealing vehicle here with a good price, good size, good looks and decent mileage. IF they'll make it available in FWD, 5sp and about 18k.

CarsDirect Price: $15,110
This is for a Patriot with manual and 2wd.
Add Group 25E. This makes it have all the goodies you need.
Add the tow group, the full size spare, and the cloth bucket seats(vinyl is nasty). Add fog lamps, engine block heater(always good to have for a paltry $30), and floor mats.

$18,400 including delivery charge.

Why not just order it exactly as you want? You will have to wait a bit, but then you don't have to pay for extras.

I forgot to mention, though, that you should get the 4x4. It's about $1700 more than the 2wd, but trust me on this - nobody but nobody wants a 2wd jeep used. Imagine trying to sell an automatic 911 but three times worse.

The 4x4 will hold its value at least 2K more than the 2wd version pretty much forever. Even twenty year old Jeeps with 4x4 are worth 3-4K. The 2wd versions are in the junkyards. And if you get into snow or rain, you are good to go.

But there's never been Jeeps like the Patriot and Compass. They're based on a FWD car. I doubt if traditional "Rubicon" Jeep owners are interested in the Patriot and Compass.

These Jeeps appeal to a whole different segment. Those who only need FWD and want a comfortable ride, good handling and decent mileage. Some will go for the Freedom Drive II in the Patriot, but IMO that was just to appease Jeep purists.

Not true. Take a look at old Cherokees, which are the colosest thing to a Patriot that Jeep has made in the past.(FWD/RWD aside). 2wd versions are impossible to do anything other than trade in for scrap. Nobody wants them.

Even if you never use it, it still is a no-cost option down the road since you get that money back, and it's actually possible to sell private party for a decent price - and quickly, too, especially if it's never spent any significant time off-road)

Patriot 4WD Systems - Question by mb789

Does anyone know if the Patriot 4WD can be left in 4WD mode all the time -- like Selec-Trac on other Jeep models? The Jeep web site's descriptions were not totally clear. I didn't know if the Patriot has true 4WD or if it was like other car makers' systems where it engages when wheels start slipping (which is what I don't want). I had a Liberty with Selec-Trac and loved it.

I test drove the Patriot today, but was surprised I found it a little sluggish. I have a Subaru Forester now, and it felt more sluggish that this. But, I loved the cargo area of the Patriot -- plastic, easily washable surfaces, which would be perfect after taking my two dogs out for walks.

If it's the Freedom Drive II, you can leave it in 4wd mode. And it's essentially a "locked" mode, no gimmicks.

If you go back a few pages, you'll see a link to a review. It does true off-road fairly well.

I like it because it's a basic, inexpensive, no frills 4x4 "box". Actually, very little money.
