I drove one and was very prepared to not like it. Boy was I surprised. The 5-speed makes a big difference with the 4-cylinder engine. It handles well and is of decent size. Plus it looks like a Jeep. If they market this right, Jeep will make a lot of money, particularly since the Liberty has a reputation of gulping down gas.

The thing about it is that it's a basic box. We don't need 3600-4000lb bloated tnaks or leather or any of that nonsense... What *I* want is a basic vehicle that seats 4-5 people and has 4x4.

Without having to buy the extended cab or the LXT mk4 luxury package or the sunroof or...

I just want a 4x4 to get around in for well under $20K. That's not a joke off-road. Okay off-road is fine - I can put better MTs on it and a 2 inch lift and so on to help, but it's not a Wrangler or supposed to be.

I just wish they offered the 4x4 with the manual transmission.

You can get a 5 speed and 4 X 4; just not the trail rated version with ultra low.

The thing is - the basic 4x4 isn't the same. No heavy duty parts, no skid plates, no low-range....

Basically there's NO REASON AT ALL for Jeep to not at least offer it to us.

Err it is a caliber underneath do you think anyone will actually make a lift kit for it?

Funny you should say that. There are already 2 inch lift kits, new metal bumpers, and so on for it. It's not a bad platform. Take the Corolla. You can hardly see a Corolla anymore in a Vibe, for instance. Don't let the fact that the Caliber is ugly as sin dissuade you from the fact that it is a good car.

The Patriot is essentially a new replacement for the Cherokee. Cheap, easy to modify, and gets the job done. Just... where in the world is the manual transmission? That CVT blows and they know it.(though I do have to admit a CVT is *exactly* what you want off-road in an automatic transmission)

Come on you can't really call the Patriot the next Cherokee. It has a weak 4 cylinder compared to the strong 6 cylinder in the old cherokee. It doesn't have a real low range because 19:1 is not a crawl ratio. It has a fully independent suspension compared to the sturdy solid axle design of the cherokee. Solid axles are just better off-road then independent designs unless the independent suspension is using an air spring to mimic a solid beam axle.

Depending on the engine, trans, axle combo in a XJ the crawl ratio could be in the 30:1 or more range. I had a XJ for many years and the patriot is no XJ.

All I can say is that the proof's there. If it can do that, it's a Cherokee replacement. And the old V6 put out no more power than the new 4 does - isn't technology great?

It seems to be doing as well as the other two vehicles, and in one part, was light enough to get past a tricky point.

19:1 isn't a true rock-crawler's ratio, but then again, a typical SUV wasn't ever made to be a Wrangler. Also, the CVT manages torque much better than an automatic, so you don't NEED to crawl as slow to get the job done. The reason you need such silly low ratios is because the typical engine/transmission gets no torque unless it's wound up - and the low range is to keep it from lurching forward quickly when you let the clutch out(say if you had the engine wound up to 4000rpm).

So they make silly low ratios so that you don't lug/stall the engine and can keep it wound up to maximum torque. The CVT, OTOH, keeps the torque up and you won't ever lug the engine.

Check out this picture. It passes my litmus test if it can get up that. Stock, no less. And definately better than the ill-concieved Liberty.

I think it's a perfect replacement for the Cherokee. It's a nice, inexpensive weekend off-roader for the typical person. It's obviously not a Wrangler or a Tacoma 4x4. But it's way under $20K as well.

LR2 vs Patriot? by bstoecker

Why would someone be comparing these two?

Patriot starts at $14,985
LR2 starts at $34,700

If your on a budget for a Patriot, then you best stop looking at the luxury of the Land Rover LR2. It will only tease you for what you crave but can't get in the Patriot. But if you must dream, then go ahead and compare the two.
