I am very seriously considering buying a Patroit in less than 2 weeks. The price is about $1000. less than a Compass. Which we are looking into if we can't get a Patriot. Is the Patroit a good vehicle? We presently have a 05 Jeep Liberty CRD which has been to the dealer 23 times, and still there are fore problems that are not fixed for the forth time. We want to spend less than $24,000. We want a gas vehicle that gets at least 23 mpg, which they both say the vehicles will do. Any thoughts? Farout

If you're in the market segment for a small crossover vehicle, the Patriot looks like a good entry level vehicle. It seems much truer to the Jeep roots than the Compass. To put an Land Rover slant on it (which is the forum you posted into) the LR2 is in a very different class, and the two don't even closely compare. The LR2 is an entry level luxury vehicle and has a much higher grade trim level than many of the Jeep products. The LR2 also theoretically has better offroad capability due to the Terrain Response system. Ultimately, we'll never know until someone does a head-to-head on them, but a LR2 is more than double the cost of a Patriot, so there really isn't a point to that one. |

It has a CVT that can engage a super low first gear to get a 19:1 crawl ratio. That is not low range as there is not a seperate low gear in the transfer case. The LR2 has a crawl ratio of around 15.5:1 because it is using a 6 speed automatic with a very low first gear. The Patriot makes 165(foot/lbs) The LR2 makes 234(foot/lbs) So the LR2 motor makes 69 more foot/lbs at 1200 less rpms. I think that makes up for the slightly worse crawl ratio. |

Not bashing Jeep at all since I put over 200,000 miles on an 86 Cherokee with few problems. Course, that was an AMC Jeep. I am considering a Patriot myself. Haven't seen one yet though. I'll report back (to the Jeep forum) at that time. Will want to look at the LR2 too b4 I move. |

Unfortunately this next guy should have been eliminated from contention when I pushed 1 for English. He offered to show me an Aspen.' More proof that car salespeople are ... Oh nevermind. I'm on my good behaviour medicine.

Of course, so is the prospect of importing a Defender so we'll see which wins out - If my wife gets the LR3 full-time, and I get a Defender, or she gets the LR2, and I keep the LR3? /DA

I stopped in to look at a Patriot last night. No one was there, and I told the "nice" salesman I just wanted to look at the Jeep and had no intent on buying for a month or more and I didn't want to waste his time. He said "No big deal, let's take it for a drive because I have nothing else to do." So I drive it, like, drive it back and start talking. I tell him I had a Cherokee bla, bla, bla, and I may be interested in ordering a base model with a CVT and AC when I decide to buy. Now the "bad" salesman walks up and starts on the slime-speech of how much can you spend, what do you want your payments to be etc and then points to some tiny tin-box Suzuki sewing machine and assures me he can slip me into that baby for $16.5K. I told him the Patriot I want is the same price. Then he tried to make me feel like a cave man because I didn't "need" power windows and locks. I said if I want power, I may go with a Caliber SXT Sport for the same 17K (he wasn't a Dodge dealer). Thinking that might let him know I was smarter than a 5th grader only spurred him on to offer me a mini-van (I have 5 kids). "We have our Durango for hauling all seven of us," I told him, "That's why I was looking for a car to drive to work." Then he wanted to show me a seven passenger Suzuki something or another. They must really need to sell those things DJP
