I've just joined the Forum & have been enjoying reading the posts.   Haven't bought a car yet, still deciding what suits me best (probably 2006 if I can find one in virtually perfect condition and quite loaded), but one of my possible problems is the need to tow a small motorcycle-carrying trailer, a couple of times a year.   The total weight will only be about 850lbs.   On Euro sites I can find many references to towing with a 5-series, but not in the US. Does this mean that there are no towing packages available here?   I can't beleive I'd have to change my choice of car just beacuse of this...   Thanks in advance for any help.   Alex Replies to this message: 2saint (Mar 05, 2008 12:11 pm)

As I'm sure you've noted, E61 owners everywhere except those in North America have the option to install a "tow bar" and the necessary wiring to tow a trailer. For a reason I've yet to discover and unlike most Japanese, Swedish and American manufacturers (the new Malibu and Cadillac sedans are rated for 1000 lb. towing), both BMW and MBZ feel we drivers in American are not capable of towing a trailer unless we use a SUV type vehicle such as the X3, X5 or a ML. I have a hitch ( a Curt, manufactured here in the USA) on my 530XIt that I use with my bike rack and to tow a small sailboat. However, I've yet to find someone who will install a proper wiring harness .
