Rocky, do you have facts - along with citations to credible sources - to back up those assertions? (And the UAW publication Solidarity is not a credible source.)

The American complaint used to be that the Japanese - both white- and blue-collar employees - worked TOO hard and were burying us because of their work ethic. Has this suddenly changed in the last 10-15 years?

I do not know about the rest of the country but as the domestic auto industry has downsized, the work has not, people are overworked and concerned about their jobs. My wife works from 7:00 to 5:30 everyday and tries to get in 2 hours of emails at night just to keep up. No OT pay.

And she says this is normal for most. In fact she is the first to leave every night so she can see the kids for more than 2 hours a day.

She can always quit. My wife did. The kids needed her. I'll do the extra work. Not her.

This is rampant everywhere in the USA today, especially if you're a salaried employee. I work from 7:00AM to 7:00PM, 5-days a week (I'm on a late lunch break now!), and receive no OT pay. The non-union salaried commercial sector is being worked to death. I had one week of vacation last summer. Compare that to the Japanese, and especially the European's!

We here in America are fast becoming subservient economically to others in industrialized nations around the world. The dollar is worth a fraction of what it once was, and this is exactly why it's cheaper for companies to manufacture here - their primary direct costs, especially labor, are cheaper.

This is exactly correct. US labor is 1/2 the price of the rest of the western world. It's far less expensive to produce here and more stable.

I have a part-time second job... by lemko

...doing physical inventory. The managers start out with a $36,000 salary and a car, but they work like 14-16 hours a day. They wanted to make me a manager, but I declined as I earn more than twice at my regular job than what the big boss at this company makes. I've also found the fastest way to get fired from this place is to get promoted. They put a lot of pressure on these managers for what is really less than minimum wage. You're better off just being an ordinary worker bee.

What about Nissan and GM? by greenday91490

What if GM and Nissan bought Chrysler, and kept it as its own company, so it wouldn't merge with either portfolio? I know its unlikely but these two companies had amazing turn-arounds, and maybe if they worked together, they could pull it off. Nissan would get its heavy-duty truck platform that it doesn't have, and GM would get new minivans, along with a platform for the Hummer H4, if the cost were split, and especially if GM could get a price reduction or maybe even trade Saab,(MB could probably do way better with it).

True enough but they have hit a home run or at least a solid one off the wall with the new Altima. They have to get their Titan act together and do something about the Quest for starters. A better looking Maxima wouldn't hurt either.

My source was a study not by the UAW but rather by the IUE. It was a study done by the U.S. department of labor from the mid 90's.

The American complaint used to be that the Japanese - both white- and blue-collar employees - worked TOO hard and were burying us because of their work ethic. Has this suddenly changed in the last 10-15 years?

We used to be out worked by the Japanese in the 70's
(I think) and if you read articles like I have from various news publications only New Zeeland is more productive than the U.S. The Europeans per labor hour are the most productive and can do as much work in a 35 hour work week as americans can in 40 hours. One proposal I read was a 6 hour workday with no lunch and pay the people for 40 hours. Some employers do this and find a lot of benefits and happier employees.

So it's all speculation as nothing new has been released yet ? I've haven't read squat about the auto-industry for about 8 or 9 days because of computer virus. YUK !!!! .......
