cruiser1964:

I came to this forum because I have a similar question. I will be picking up my NAH tomorrow and have been looking into after market stereo/nav systems (didn't want to pay $5000 for the factory packages, and I HAVE to have satellite radio). I use Crutchfield.com often, as they have always been very good. Their website is saying that you will lose the chime (door ajar, lights on, etc) if the factory stereo is replaced (didn't matter if I queried replacing base radio or Bose system with or without nav). I called Crutchfield and one of their techs (who was not very familiar with the issue, but read his tech manual to confirm) and he didn't see any solution to this issue. Now, losing the chime is not a major issue, but I'd prefer that my brand new car work like a brand new car.

With that said, I second your question. Anyone out there who has replaced their facotry system with an after-market system, what have been the negative repercussions (if any)?

Thanks!!

Update:

What I've decided to is:
- keep the factory deck (keeps the car looking factory plus I still have the steering wheel controls)

- add in an amp and replace the factory speakers. I'll still have the look of a factory NAH, but the kickass sound of a 20 year old's car (i'm 44).

I've spoken to a quite a few stereo places where I live and to keep the factory deck, you add in an RE-Q5 and then connect the amp to it. It's supposed to help the sound quality.

I'm getting it done this Friday so will keep you posted.

thanks,
Cruiser

I heard it's different resistances and stuff. you're better off just going aftermarket and not try to convert to the bose (as I see you're in the process of)

For those of you into car audio, here is what I did with my '09 NAH.

1) Kept the factory radio (in Canada, it only comes with the single cd, am/fm)..we don't get the optional Bose system upgrade that you guys in the states get. The shop then installed an RE-Q5 to help produce better sounds (something like a 21st century equalizer that is installed in the dash behind the radio).

2) I then replaced the front door 6.5" speakers with Eclipse SC6500's (they have a removable tweeter).
- the stereo shop replaced the dash tweeter with the tweeters from the SC6500's

3) replaced the rear 6x9's with Eclipse SP6910's

4) to power everything, I have an Eclipse XA4200 amp

5) I've also added in Sirius satellite radio. Actually the stereo shop installed the Sirius receiver in my sunglass holder. It fits perfect and is out of the way when I don't need it.

The system sounds pretty good. I chose Eclipse because they are rated quite high.

For their website, goto: http://www.eclipse-web.com/us/index.html

Something to think about....I went out on the limb because my I didn't even my car a month and I made these changes!...am quite pleased on how they turned out.

I think two things may be in play here. First, the economy and the fact that the hybrids are more expensive than regular cars. Car sales in general are down and the price compounds the problem.

Second, the fact that gas prices relaxed some over the last year. I think price will play a role for some time, unless the gas jumps up again. We bought our NAH in May of 07 when we saw the gas prices starting to go up and our Acura RL was getting 19 mpg on premium fuel (20 cents more per gallon).

Tom, I think those are two great points. I am glad to hear you are loving your NAH!

One last question if I can???

How long did you debate on hybrid or no hybrid?
