If one was to run out of gas, could one still drive to the gas station off of the battery with no gasoline?

Q: How long will a Prius or Highlander keep moving on battery power if it's out of gas?

GS: Only for a short distance -- a mile or so. The battery isn't designed for primary traction power, other than driving in reverse; it's there to capture energy that would be lost in deceleration or braking, and to optimize the power of the gasoline engine, all of which extends the vehicle's fuel mileage and limits emissions.

The information was found in this article (the Camry hybrid system is identical);

Thanks, that is good to know. A mile is more than enough to get me to the gas station in the city.

The other day, I drove my car with battery power only, from WalMart, across the main street, through a neighborhood, and over to the library, never once kicking in the main gas engine. At that time, I wondered if the car would do the same if I had run out of gas. It is good knowing it would go that far without gasoline.

Will the TCH continue to run on the gas engine if the hybrid battery should ever go dead? I would think that it would run just like the standard Camry if this should happen.

No, if the hybrid battery is dead the gas engine cannot be started.

The HSD is designed to always use the electric portion of the drive. So if you are driving already and the battery goes dead, the vehicle will stop working.

Note that the Honda IMA will continue to work as you describe, but then it is not a "full" hybrid in the sense of the Toyota HSD.

On the flip side though, if you run out of gas, the TCH should run on the electric motor a short enough distance to get you to a gas station, right? I've purposely driven about 4 to 5 miles just on the battery to see if I could do it. The battery still showed about 3/4 strength.

Answered at the start of this thread -- yes but it is short.
