Hello There. I used to have a 1995 SHO. Great engine, mediocre car. Depreciated like mad. Don't get me wrong, I am a big Ford fan, a stockholder, and I still have my 1995 F150 Supercab Lariat XLT 4x4, in mint condition after 125,000 miles. But geez, these things depreciate like mad.

I have a chance to buy a 2000 Taurus Wagon, with 65,000 miles on it. It belonged to a friends Dad, who passed away. Florida car, no rust, not a lot of wear. Blue book is $3000 to $4500 or so. Asking price is $1500.

It sort of is a no-brainer to me. But should I be aware of any particular problems in these cars? What sort of stuff "always breaks" on the new Taurii that I should look into.

I recall on the SHO it was the water pump that went at about 60K miles. Anything similar here?

Thanks in advance....

I am looking at a 2001 Mercury Sable.
It has 52,000 miles.
I know the owner, and trust him when he says car is clean and runs good. Mileage is low because his father owned it, but died. My friend inherited the car, but does not travel far to work.He is moving up to a newer car due to a recent promotion at work.
I have been a Ford man my whole life.
I have owned 4 Ford Taurus cars, and I know Sable is very close to a Taurus.
Can anybody help me and tell me anything bad or good about Mercury Sable, particularly 2001?
Boy, when you sit in it and look at the controls, it looks just like my 2000 Taurus.
Any and all input is appreciated.

robertplattbel and bigdan1:

I owned a 2000 Merc. Sable wagon which developed problems first identified in the power steering pump and later in the rack and pinion assembly. The latter would've been replaced but wasn't because the car was totaled in an unfortunate accident. Please do yourselves a favor and have this checked out as it is a somewhat costly repair quite common to Tauri/Sables.
