Electro-magnetic interference with door lock function by carz89

I parked my Prius this morning along the waterfront in Point Loma, San Diego, but could not lock my doors in the typical fashion (by pushing the square black button on the door handle). I tried the secondary method of locking the doors with the remote. Nothing working. I had to lock the car with the tertiary method of the door lock switch inside the door. Just then, I turned around and noticed an aircraft carrier returning to port about 1/2 mile away, with it's surface search, air search and navigational radars operating. To confirm my suspicions, I asked a coworker who drives a Prius to come out and try to unlock his car remotely. His keyfob didn't work either, nor did the "touch sensors" on his door handles.

After the ship passed well out of view, we tried our remotes and "touch sensor" methods again, and this time they worked. I think my theory is confirmed that powerful ship radars will interfere with the frequencies used by the remote keyfob. I'm sure there are other sources of electromagnetic energy besides ship radars that could result in the same interference.

Anyone know what exact frequency the keyfobs operate in? Knowing that, we might be able to narrow it down to the exact radar causing the problem.

How do I open a FOB? by math69

I have a 2006 Prius level 3. The FOB that I have been using for more than two years has been through the wash at least once. Now the button that opens the door locks is stuck in the down position. This prevents me from either locking or unlocking the car using the FOB. I've removed the ring and manual key, slid the top off of the FOB, unscrewed the battery cover, and removed the battery (a Panasonic CR2032 3v by the way), but still I cannot access the button from the back. How can I open the FOB so I can access the buttons from the back?

Check the disable switch under the steering column. It's possible the switch got bumped or something and turned off. This disables the sensors for when you aren't going to be using the vehicle for a long time to prevent running the battery down.

Have you either found an answer for this, or have found out how to open it yourself? I have a similar problem, although slightly more embarrassing. My panic button is stuck down, and constantly causes my car to enter panic mode. I've also disassembled my key to the point of taking out the battery, but can't figure out how to get any farther than that.

Thanks for any info you may be able to provide!

I had a recent problem with my FOB for my 2004 Prius. I live in the Rockies at 8,000 ft. elevation. When driving to Chicago (sea level) the FOB buttons stayed down. I was ready to order a replacement but a day after driving back to Aspen the FOB was again working perfectly.

Thats funny as I had a problem with my HHR we tow behind our motorhome in Estes Park, Co. Push button to lock door and the lock button on the inside of the door wouldn't go down about half the time all though the door did lock, it worked all the time in Mi. Got back home to Mi. and no more problems. And a year later still going strong.
