Article comments for Project Mustang GT vs. Shelby GT500, Part 1 - We began with our long-term 2005 Mustang project car, long since retired from our test fleet. Then we put together a list of parts and suppliers. Our mission: Build a Mustang that could top the GT500's performance for about $5,000 less than the Shelby's retail price. (more)

Project Mustang GT vs. Shelby GT500, Part 2 - "I'll tell you one thing, there's nothing like building up an old automobile from scratch and wiping out one of these Detroit machines. That'll give you a set of emotions that'll stay with you. Know what I mean?" (more)

Im impressed, I never thought edmunds would do a tuner article let alone a interesting one. It would be nice to test both the shelby and your mustang. I suspect the shelby will win out in low end torque but loose in horse power. Also I think your vortec driven mustang will win at the strip, but you should test the shelby with the drag radials also just to be fair. Good article.

Yeah, never thought I'd see edmunds do this kind of article as well But since you're going to dyno the car, and since you're using an aftermarket chip, why not change the pulley for say, 12-15 psi, and do some tuning while you're on the dyno?

But why such narrow rims? by tr6nut

The article stated that you installed 275/40ZR18 BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KD tires on 18-by-8.5-inch, Axis Reverb hollow-spoke wheels with a 40mm offset. Why so narrow? The technical specs for the 275/40ZR18 tire state that the minimum rim width should be 9.0 inches.

What's the fate of the project car now?

Will they add a different radiator, change the plugs/ignition, tune the suspension some more, use brake pads more suitable for hi-perf street/track driving like Ferodo DS2500 or Pagid Black, and maybe add a limited-slip diff and headers, then come back for a part 3 to see if they can find any improvements in both livability, durability and performance while not blowing the budget?

I have to say that by not doing at least some of these things, this looks a bit like "amateur hour" and doesn't really answer the question of making a true comparison between how closely you can make an aftermarket-prepped car resemble something refined right from the factory.

The price difference is significant. It's good that you noted the actual price versus the MSRP. But... the GT500 is going to be collectible and hold it's value, whereas your DIY rod is going to depreciate quickly. So, if I HAD the money, I'd take the Shelby for the long run.

That dyno graph looks terrible. Your tuning is off, you need to adjust the gap in the spark plugs (smaller by .008 because you added about 100hp), and take it to somewhere to get a better dyno tune. If you are using whatever caned tune came with the vortech that is not good enough you need a real dyno tune by someone who tunes mustangs frequently. Also I am kind of surprised it got so few hp even with the intercooler. The ATI is supposed to be the better head unit and all but the difference between an ATI and the Vortech should not be this great you need it to be protuned.

Amateur Hour is right. However these guys are amateurs! They are not pro builders at all. The problem is limited budgets. The GT500 is a halo car. Ford can advertise that it can beat whoever with a Mustang GT. In our high school minds a Dodge Charger can outrun anything if you were a Dukes fan. It is hard to build a car as good as a super tuned factory car with a limited budget. They had to use a supercharger to get in the neighborhood of power with a smaller displacement engine. It sounds like they nailed the handling on it. But all budget performance cars have to be a compromise somewhere. With enough money you can build a Supra that will outrun a Ferrari but hey that was in a movie too. But I think Edmunds should fix the tuning and install a bigger radiator and have some fun in the canyons and on the track in a grudge rematch!
