Replying to: cz75 (Feb 02, 2007 12:21 pm) Amateur Hour is right. However these guys are amateurs! They are not pro builders at all. The problem is limited budgets. The GT500 is a halo car. Ford can advertise that it can beat whoever with a Mustang GT. In our high school minds a Dodge Charger can outrun anything if you were a Dukes fan. It is hard to build a car as good as a super tuned factory car with a limited budget. They had to use a supercharger to get in the neighborhood of power with a smaller displacement engine. It sounds like they nailed the handling on it. But all budget performance cars have to be a compromise somewhere. With enough money you can build a Supra that will outrun a Ferrari but hey that was in a movie too. But I think Edmunds should fix the tuning and install a bigger radiator and have some fun in the canyons and on the track in a grudge rematch! Replying to: ahightower (Feb 02, 2007 7:05 pm) the problem with that thinking is you'd end up saying "OMG, my Shelby is worth a hundred grand" and so the paranoia will start "IS THAT A ONE MILLIMETER SCRATCH? NO!!!! MY LIFE'S WORK IS GONE." With the project car, you could have fun and beat it up, then fix it, then beat it up again worry free.

What happened to the RX-8 project car? You said in the long-term wrap up that you would mod that one, too

However, I expect more from an organization dedicated to automobiles and their technology than the backyard builder. Surely they can find the right people to help them in their quest, especially with engine tuning. An early indication, to me, that they didn't do a lot of research is their choice of brake pads. Hawk HPS aren't really all that good and not remotely up to track use, while the pads I mentioned previously, are and also do well when street-driven. Replying to: cz75 (Feb 05, 2007 7:53 am) What car are you referring to in terms of HPs not being good? The Hawk HPs pads are probably one of the best pads for street cars and auto-x. And for the occasional HPDE event (say 1 a year in a novice group) they are perfectly suitable. Then what is the DOT edgecode for the HPS? I heard it is FE. HP+, Pagid Black, Cobalt GT-Sport, and Ferodo DS2500 are all GG edgecode pads that do well on the street and (light) track. HPS are what I put on my mother's TL-S and I wish I had used Axxis/PBR Ultimates instead. I believe the HPS have a fade critical temp of around 750-800F. Replying to: cz75 (Feb 06, 2007 4:45 pm) I'm not sure of the DOT edgecodes, however HPs is what we've been putting on Subarus (100s and 100s) for street, auto-x, and an occasional track day. HP+ is what we use for people more interested in track days and hard street driving with the disadvantage of more dust and noise. On our race car, we use Hawk Blues which need to be heated up or you will kill your rotors. -mike
