My problem with the Commander will it be reliable like the TLC an have the longevity like the TLC. I keep cars on the average of 10 years. I have a 02 TLC no problems still runs smooth and still feels tight. Now if you are in and out of cars 3 to 5 years I guess it wouldn't matter just the value at trade in.

Hi! Yes I have tried the rear seat in the Commander and the Land Cruiser and I didn't find a difference. Where I did find a slight difference was in the second row. However for me and my wife the third row doesn't matter much because we only have one child who is sixteen now and will be doing his own driving soon. I just like having the third row if needed but I would never ask anyone to ride back in any of the third row seats that we have tried for an extended period of time. They all have seemed pretty uncomfortable to me even the larger suv's like the Navigator and Escalade.
Most of the time for us the 3rd row will be folded down and use for basic cargo.

I am not sure of how any jeep will retain it's value but I will research it although that isn't the determining factor for me to purchase any vehicle. As you stated I am not one to keep a car for more than 5 years.

dds872 - I, like you, consider myself a car fanatic, would routinely turn vehicles over at 4-5 years. Things changed when I bought an '02 BMW 330CI...fantastic sports car, expensive but you can't beat the quality and performance. I hope to keep that car another 5 years. Sold our '99 Toyota 4Runner to buy an '06 TLC simply because we wanted an SUV with greater towing capacity and wanted some nicer features...will hopefully keep this vehicle 10 years as well. Quality comes at a premium but we feel this is money well spent, could not be happier with our TLC.

LC has basic shortcomings by pjc1

IMHO the commander is a real alternative to the TLC. Loaded up it is almost $20K less than the LC and although the jury is out on reliability....the commander has more features and creature comforts than the LC.

I just purchased an LC and am dissappointed in the lack of basic (not even luxury) featues on this car. For $60k it is not only dated it is lacking in some basic (and easily dealt with) areas.

Congratulations on your LC, It's certainly is a beautiful vehicle and I would love to own one but the price is a little to steep for my pockets. As for me I don't want to keep any vehicle more than 5 years, I would get bored with it after that length of time. I don't even want to keep a house for that long. For god sake, I just got rid of a Crossfire after one year.

Thank you for your support, most people on here believe that when you want to compare one vehicle to another especially one like Toyotas famed Land Cruiser that you are saying one is better than the other. Which is not the case with my post, I'm simply stating that if you like a vehicle like the LC but don't like the steep entry price you have to shop elsewhere and get the closest thing that your pocket can afford. In this particular comparison I felt in my opinion that these two vehicles really stacked up well against one another although they were priced thousands of dollars apart. I also lean more towards the square muscular lines of the Commander as opposed to the softer lines of the Land Cruiser.

Dear dds872, pjc1, bdb888:

You all have valid points.

dds872: I researched the market for over 12 months for the same reasons (one of my neighbors bought the Commander in 2005, the other the Sequoia). I compared these to the Landcruiser, 4Runner V8 and Tundra V8 (same engines).

pjc1: Just like you, I watched the reliability, depreciation, and maintenance issues and voted for the 4Runner V-8, 4x4. With select options it cost me US $31K. (Labor in case of the 4Runner is approximately $67/hr, for the Sequoia and Landcruiser I was quoted $95/hr.)

bdb888: The Commander is a good candidate - especially with the new engine but past reliability was an issue.

The Sequoia is an other good SUV but pricey and the ride was stiffer than in the 4Runner. The availability of spare parts, maintenance and skilled mechanics were also considered. I also wanted the same V8 engine/ transmission that is shared between the LC, Sequoia and Tundra. The least expensive solution was the 4Runner V-8, 4x4 - it saved me about $24,000 - but I am still thinking of the LC!

Don't follow my example! My advice to you all: buy the car of your dreams; enjoy it; have fun with it because - you deserve it. We are young only once! Good luck and happy motoring: Andrew17

Another observation...I drove the 4Runner, LC, LX470 and Sequoia...amongst others and it is easy to be hipnotized by the cushy ride of the LC...but...I think you made the right decision..the ride and handling characteristics of the LC do not imbue confidence when the going gets tricky at higher speeds (over 40 mph). I believe the handling of the 4runner and LX470 at those speeds is superior in every way. Congratulations on your 4runner....

Please disregard if you are offended by an opposing view.
For the purposes of this message, when refering to LC it means Land Cruiser or equal from Lexus.
The Hyundai has greater creature comforts in it for the money than most vehicles, that doesn't make it a better long term value does it? Out of 36 manufacturers, JEEP ranks dead last (that's 36th out of 36 ranked by JD Powers) for quality/dependability. Don't get me started on how Jeep tanks for cost of ownership. FYI: I own 2 Jeeps. I used to own a 4Runner and wish I could have it back. It did save my life in a 55mph front collision that I walked away from, so I can live with it's absence, just wish I had enough money to buy another. Power, LC has got all mentioned beat. Safety features including those that kick-in during interstate or low speeds, LC has got everyone beat. Offroad capability (not that very many people do this), again LC wins out. Gas effeciency, rukidding me? The hemi, it has TWO firing off of the spark plugs, one to fire off creating combustion to get you going, another firing to burn the gas in the chamber that did not burn the first time because it is so darn inefficient it would toast the system to transfer out all that unburned gas. I agree, the Jeep has a great feel, but really? Safer, better, more economical? Really? Feel doesn't mean anything when your flipping head over heals 65mph because you don't have the safety equip of a LC. Gee, that thing sure had a great "feel" going in a straight line in ideal or close to ideal conditions. It felt great in rain cause it uses heavy metal and outdated technology and materials so it SINKS into puddles that most lighter cars would hydroplane in. Try a little Crawl mode, oh no, nevermind, that is on the Toyota product. How about demanding a dealership allow you to TEST drive instead of Sunday drive your vehicle. I mean slam the breaks at 65mph. Floor it from a dead stop and again a test with full acceleration from 35 to 75 to see what it is like getting on the interstate. Turn the wheel all the way around check out the turn radius, and while doing that floor the gas, hear that dinging when the safety features chime in to prevent you from flipping in the LC that you probably don't hear elsewhere. 4Runner DAC control, wahoooooooo, watch all the rest of the overpriced SUV's spin down an icy hill while my 4Runner keeps me straight and true. Initial cost, yes, Jeep got Toyota beat. Long term though, the Jeep stands like jello in 100 degree heat.
Okay, sorry if I offended. Toyota does not endorse this message, and no animals were hurt during the ranting of this message. All statements are factual to the best of my knowledge, and I claim to have very little of that. Some observations and statements may have no basis in fact as they are completely based in personal feeling with no substantial scientific evidence. I agree with someone up there, you only live once and you might as well get what you like, what ever it may be.
Peace!
