In Canada the Subaru service interval is 6000 km (approx 3700 miles), vs 8000 km (approx 5000 miles) for Toyota, so you're in there a little more often with a Subaru, and its services are a little more involved, so the cost is a bit higher.

The service reminder light is one of those Toyota features that's market-specific. Canadian models don't have it. Even if ours did, I'd probably never see it anyway since we don't rack up enough miles and go by time instead with a service every six months!

You're right about the cartridge-type filter - that's a common DIY complaint about the 2GR-FE.

More involved, really?

I looked at the list of services for my Sienna, and it actually seemed longer than for our Forester.

For instance, in the AWD version, it calls for the tech to check the torque of the rear axle shaft, which seems like overkill, and Subaru doesn't require that.

Subaru's AWD is sealed and maintenance-free. The only thing aside from normal maintenance you have to do is the rear diff fluid, and that's true for any AWD vehicle (exception being electrically driven hybrids).

Is your RAV4 FWD? That might explain it.

One advantage of the 2GR V6 from Toyota: chain driven cams, so no belts to replace. Though to be fair Subaru's interval for those is 105,000 miles.

Nope, ours is AWD. The FWD RAV4 has just gone on sale here for the first time ever and it's so new that the maintenance guide doesn't cover it.

What I meant by more involved is that the Subaru maintenance schedule calls for certain other items, not just regular oil changes, to be performed more often. For example, the 48000-km service on a Subaru is about 3.5 hours recommended time; on a RAV4 about half that, in part because the Toyota isn't getting new plugs, coolant or a brake service (caliper lubrication). So during that first 48k km the Subaru is in the shop eight times (vs six for the Toyota) with more work being done during the Subaru's visits as well.

Again, though, if I preferred the Forester the increased maintenance requirements wouldn't deter me from buying one. It's an excellent vehicle.

Yeah, content in Canadian models differs a lot, for Subarus also.

Subarus happen to cost more in Canada than they do here, also. But you do get heated seats and the all-weather package in many more models.

What are the main differences between the two. I plan to buy a 2010,but I am not sure which one. I need some input on the main differences between the two models comparably equipped.

Drove a Santa Fe GLS by thegraduate

Today with my girlfriend I drove the 2.7L Santa Fe. It's slightly faster than a riding lawn mower, but I must say it is quite a nice vehicle. Very well screwed together, much more quiet than a CR-V (the last Crossover I drove), and it even handled decently, if not a corner carver.

Does anybody know of anything I need to let her know about before she buys it? It is a 2007 GLS model with heated leather and moonroof.

Forester -- should I heat the leather? by pilgrimjs

We opted for the Forester. The base 2.5X manual. My wife didn't like the black cloth interior -- feared it wouldn't wear well with kids -- and it did seem cheaper than what we had in our Saturn. So we're replacing with leather. This should be easier to keep clean, but should we also put in seat heaters? Never had these, nor really wanted them, but then, I never had leather seats either.

BTW, just drove 200 miles to Chicago and averaged just under 30 mpg in full car with AC. That's pretty good for an SUV. We were totally not impressed with CR-V. Looks okay from the outside, incredibly uncomfortable with bad visibility on the inside. Forester and Rav4 both much better and drive better.

I love the seat heat in my old Subaru's leather seats even though I'm not a big leather fan (I'm cold natured). If my next car doesn't have seat heaters, I may try to install a set from a kit (you can put them in cloth seats too). I'd love it in my office chair come to think of it.

We have the perforated, heated leather in our 2009 Limited and I really like it.

In fact I will go out on a limb and say it has the best seats of the 3 cars I own. The Sienna's are too flat and soft (light gray cloth), the Miata's are too hard and not padded enough (black cloth), but the Forester's leather is just right. I love the heaters and may add a set to my Miata.

So yes, go for the heated leather, it's very nice.

grad: she can't get the bigger V6?
