If people are getting those deals, you are still comparing apples and oranges. For most performance between these will be negligible, but it takes a lot more grunt from the engine to get the Freestyle moving. Audiophile? An aftermarket head unit has more wattage to 4 channels. Let's see the specs:

Freestyle 7 speakers 190 watts
Veracruz 10 speakers 605 watts
Acadia 10 speakers with 5.1 ? watts

I wouldn't be shocked if anyone got the EPA mileage if they'd keep their lead foot off of the accellerator. I've never had a problem getting the mileage out of any of the vehicles I've owned. The point is moot anyway because I need atleast 3000 lbs of towing for my lawnmover (heavy trailer, commercial zero turn mower). The current Freestyle can't do that, and frankly, I'm not impressed with the boxy wagon look. The Pacifica does the wagon/suv look much better.

The Freestyle AWD is rated 19/24. By your calculations, you should be getting 17/22. You are still providing biased comparisons of gas mileage. If you like your Freestyle, I'm happy for you, but IMHO there are better vehicles to be had right now. Maybe, Ford will improve upon the Freestyle's vehicle dynamics. I know it gets a significant horsepower bump which will also decrease its EPA numbers.

Maybe, maybe not. The Duratec35 with the 6-speed tranny in the Edge gets decent mileage. IIRC the Edge and Freestyle are roughly the same weight so you're probably looking at something like 18/25 give or take in the '08 Freestyle, which should hit dealer lots soon BTW. '07 is a short model year for the Five Hundred and Freestyle in case you're wondering.

The current FWD Freestyle is listed at 20/27 so it's taking a 2 mpg loss for 60hp or so, but that's still acceptible compared to the competition. It actually ought to be very fast considering it's fairly lightweight for its size. I like the new grill too. I'm just not sold on the profile and the current interior. GM has improved leaps and bounds in the interior department so I think Ford can improve. I'll definitely give it a second look when it comes out.

"I'm just not sold on the profile and the current interior. GM has improved leaps and bounds in the interior department so I think Ford can improve."

The Freestyle was built from the inside out. It started with a Volvo platform, then added very large windows and stadium seating. The exterior was then styled like a Ford Explorer. I have mistaken Explorers for Freestyles from a distance, especially from the rear.

The result is a car that does not ride like any Ford I've owned - it rides like a Volvo, has a "command" seating position while not requiring anyone to climb into the car, enjoys truly wonderful visibility for all occupants, has 5 star safety ratings (4 star rollover rating), and gets 20/25 MPG (my real world, not EPA). It's main drawback has been dismal Ford advertising (and lack thereof), and the low towing maximum (2000lbs).

It was designed for efficiency and comfort. I would recommend that anyone wanting seating for seven check it out - along with the other choices, of course, and so long as you don't need to tow.

I'll probably talk my wife into taking another look in 2008. (I only inform her of the details I've found and my opinions.)Towing should go up to 3500 lbs like the Edge.

I noticed a Freestyle this morning on the way to work. From the looks of it's size and specs I'm seeing on Edmunds...I think this was meant to be more competition for Mini Vans than SUVs, even though it looks more like an SUV. I'm comparing it to an Envoy XL (2002-2006). The Envoy is about the same width, taller, longer, heavier but has a much more powerful std engine in the 4.2L I6 with optional V8. Much more towing and with the longer length, more comfortable 7 passenger seating. I think Ford took a shot with the Freestyle and missed the boat...not quite enough room to compete with the Sienna & Odyssey...not enough power to compete with SUVs such as the Envoy XL. This may be where it really came up lacking and never really caught on. Kind of a 'tweener... neither a good mini-van replacement nor a SUV. Now, competing with the Lambada, I think power/performance and size will still hold it back. A refresh with a stronger engine might help, but the larger interior will be to the advantage of the Acadia/Outlook.

Now that I think about it, if they had put the Freestyle out under the Volvo brand, it might have worked better than under Ford, but I don't know if that would have fit the plans. It does look like a decent vehicle if you are willing to compromise on a few things, just there are some more attractive options to choose from.

They did. It's called the XC90. Same platform anyway.

neither a good mini-van replacement nor a SUV

Exactly...that's what a CUV is supposed to be...somewhere between a car, minivan and SUV. The fact that you can't place the Freestyle in either of these 3 categories indicates that it's a true CUV, as compared to some SUVs trying to "pretend" they're a CUV.

As far as comparing an EnvoyXL to a Freestyle, the XL is 7" longer, but has 3" less 2nd row legroom, 2" less 3rd row legroom, and worse mpg than the Freestyle.

I agree that the interior quality of the plastics isn't up to par for a $35K vehicle, but I only paid $24K for mine 2 years ago, and even at $27K today you get lot of space, a great ride, good car-like handling, low climb-in height, and good mpg in the Freestyle. But if flashy style and luxurious plastics are the main thing you're looking for, then I'd go elsewhere. The Freestyle is definitely function before form.
