How much should I pay? by kidschlepper

I have been looking to purchase a new vehicle to replace my '02 Honda Odyssey. I've looked at Cx-9, Highlander, Pilot, Sequoia, Arcadia. I love the room of the Sequoia but feel a little glutenous with the gas consumption etc. I have 3 kids ages 5-11 and a huge dog that goes everywhere with us. Anyway, I am getting way off topic. I am leaning toward the CX-9. I am looking at the GT AWD '08 model. I really don't care about the color although I do like the Crystal white pearl. For options I would want:

GT Assistance package
Moonroof/Bose
Roof rails (for the bubble/skis that I know we will need with this smaller car)
All weather floor matts (for obvious reasons/messy dogs and kids)
Cargo matt
Auto dim compass homelink mirror
Blind spot monitor (which is standard on late model '08's I think)

So what should this bad boy cost me? I live in MA. I will be buying in March/April, no hurry though. I will not be trading in my minivan.

Thanks and any input would be appreciated,

Please post your deal in terms of $ under the invoice price.

07 CX-9 $0 under invoice. At invoice.

08 CX-9 $1487 under invoice. The new standard for this car is around $1K under invoice. Watch out for the extra fees!

Includes rebates (If there are any).

Paying extra fees (Doc Fee, etc...) are still having an impact on these deals.

Keep posting those good deals.

I got another offer from the dealer, this time of a car they have on the lot. It is not the same color we wanted but it has all the accessories.

2008 CX9 Sport
Moonroof and Bose Audio Package
Back Up Camera w/Auto-Dimming Mirror Display
Power Seat
Roof Rails
Retractable Cargo Cover

MSRP: $33,265
Invoice: $30,539

Drive out price: $31,000

Car Price: $28,930
Doc Fee: $50
License, Transfer, Title: $130
Dealer Tax: $75
State Tax: $1,815

Total: $31,000

Dealer's APR is about 5.9%.... They can do it for $32,670 with the special 2.9% APR

How does it look now? No trade involved. I need to decide this week, since it is the last week of the month...

Thanks a lot!!!

Your "car price" of $28930 seems to fit the bill of a good deal. The question I have is regarding the way you are stating the APR's.

Are you saying that the "car price" of 28930 is being offered if you take 5.9% and that they would give you 2.9% if you agree to a car price of 32670?

If that is a correct assumption, then I say, how come they won't give you 2.9% for the 28930? Remember, always negotiate the car price before they even realize that you are buying all cash, buying with financing, or leasing. The "car price" should NOT dictate what interest rate you are entitled to, or vice versa.

Good luck.

According to the dealer, Mazda has a special going on that they will give me a cash back OR a special 2.9% rate. So I can choose the cash back and drive out price of $31,000 and secure my own finance (or dealer standard: 5.9%) OR I get the special rate of 2.9% but the drive out of $32,670.

Does it make sense?

MSRP: $33,265
Invoice: $30,539

CASH BACK:
Car Price: $28,930
Doc Fee: $50
License, Transfer, Title: $130
Dealer Tax: $75
State Tax: $1,815

Total: $31,000

Special Rate: 2.9%
Car Price: $30,500
Doc Fee: $50
License, Transfer, Title: $130
Dealer Tax: $79
State Tax: $1,911

Total: $32,670

How does it look?

Thanks!!!

Doesn't make sense to me. As redline said, if they're willing to sell you the vehicle for $28,930 in one scenario, they should be willing to sell at that price in ANY scenario.

It's always 3 separate negotiations on any transaction - new vehicle price, trade, and financial terms. NEVER let one affect the other.

I am confused... It seemed to me that cash back OR lower APR has always been a common practice. Is that not the case? That's why you see the two prices, one has the cash back and the other one doesn't, but it has the lower APR.
