i think the bigger $ discounts are mainly being offered in areas with excess supply, which might explain why some think it's a terrific deal. quick fyi... a local dealer here (houston, tx) currently has an ad in the paper offering $10.5K off msrp. believe it's only on "loaded" models.

I agree, bigger discounts on more loaded models.
I bought the Sport, and didn't get that much off MSRP.
Anyone know anything about the "Assessment" cost being a valid invoice item or no?

Regional assessment is a part of the cost of the car and not dealer profit. Sites like Edmunds do not track such fees because they vary from region to region.
If you go to price out a car here on Edmunds, you will see a link to "advertising fees" and their explanation as to what they are, and why they do not track them.

I bought my car at Wellesley Mazda in MA. I didn't aggressively shop competing local dealers. I did get similar quotes on FWD models from two dealers in PA (I travel there regularly, and was initially looking for a FWD which are rare in my area). Wellesley has a couple 2008's left. I ended up leasing an AWD GT with MSRP $38,305. Final price offered was ~$29,900. The lease was the same net total price (assuming a purchase at lease end financed over 24 months) as a purchase financed at ~4%. (36 month lease, 15K miles/yr, 35 total payments of $499.72 including tax, tags, title and gap insurance, 0 down). I think there are still a fair number of AWD GT's around. you should be able to get ~8K off a GT with some options (I think the discounts are less on lower trim levels and fewer options - makes sense since the net markup is lower). Good luck

sunshyne... FYI- Mazda is now removed from the X-plan program.
PS- S-Plan is equivalent to invoice.

I have seen a local dealer in PA offering the 08 AWD sport with power driver seat option only for around $24.8, but that does not include the $1000 loyalty discount. $23.8 for that vehicle...good...bad??

I have been shopping around in the Orlando area and the best offer I have gotten is $8K off MSRP. I am waiting for the week of the 25th to the 31st to launch my attack and see if I can match the $10K off deal that some have heard off. These deals are like BIGFOOT.
