Explaining $10K off by nswartzb

People keep asking how do I get $10K off.

Some earlier posts explain this but I summarize again below:

1. Dealers should start by dropping from MSRP to "invoice" that will take about $2500 off a Sport, $3000 off a Touring, and $3500 off a Grand Touring. (You can find the invoice price on Edmunds).

2. Dealers should then take off another $4000-$4500 in dealer cash back. YOU CAN'T GET THIS AND 0% FINANCING. It's an either or, and usually you'll be better off taking the cash back -- unless you're own financing is wway high. You can use the Edmunds calculator to decide which is better for you.

3. SOME DEALERS will give you up to another $2000 off. This is based on whether they meet sales goals and get incentives back from Mazda for meeting those goals. NOT ALL DEALERS WILL MEET THESE GOALS, SO NOT ALL DEALERS WILL BE OFFERING THE XTRA $2000 -- ALSO, THEY MAY TRY TO KEEP SOME OF THE MONEY FOR THEMSELVES (MY DEALERS SAID "OH THE BONUS WE GET IS AROUND $250 PER CAR". DEALERS ARE MORE LIKELY TO GIVE YO THIS AT THE END OF THE MONTH WHEN THE KNOW OR THIK THEY WIL MEET THEIR GOALS.

So,
for a Sport -- $2500 + $4500 + $2000 = $9000 (w/o bonus $7000)
for a Touring -- $3000 + $4500 + $2000 = $9500 (w/o bonus $7500)
for a Grand Touring -- $3500 +$4500 + $2000 = $10000 (w/o bonus $8000)

Hope this helps -- as always the specific options of the car may make a dealer give more or less depending on whether they think it will sell sooner or later.

In your opinion what should be a good deal for those of us who also have S-plan pricing?

I have one dealer in LA that will to go from 34K(MSRP) to 25.5K on a 2008 FWD CX-9 with moonroof but i have told him i i want the 8.5K off the s-plan price of 31.4K for a price of 22.9K.

Is that reasonable?

I think good deals are based on the market value of the vehicle. If there is demand, there is no reason for a $11K discount on a such a good vehicle. Over here (Raleigh, NC) I see less CX-9s than new Highlander's, which is incredibly overpriced next to the CX-9.

Pretty much employee discount. I get it from working at WPP who do a lot of Fords advertising.

Hi derrickson,

thanks for all your help. I would have pull the trigger if I can get $9k off. Unfortunately, I only get a $8.4k and another $8.3k off, everybody else (including Russell and Smith and Munday) are not even close to that.

We are getting closed to November and Consumer Report will have the newest report out (with statistics on 2008 vehicles), I am going to wait.

S-Plan is the price for people working on companies that do signifcant business with Ford. It is, in effect, the invoice price plus whatever "administrative fees" the Mazda dealer decides to tack on to it.

It is also open to ANYONE that knows someone at Ford. You can have your Ford contact get you the necessary PIN online within Ford Intranet and go from there. Nor sure though nowadays with the discounts out there, it is worth it?

"Not exactly sure what are they thinking. The stock market is crashing. The housing is going down. The cars are just getting older as days go by. Do they honestly thinking that time is on their side? "

Yes, losing money on inventory makes total sense in a down economy. Are you kidding me? That's the best way to go out of business.

Selling at those outrageous discounts only happened when the threat of 09's were on the horizon, as well as the rest of dealer inventory was consistently going out the door, therefore sales objectives were met, and paid incentives over came the initial losses on the CX-9's. Since overall sales are down, dealers still need to keep the doors open, and are not reluctant to sell at those outrageous discounts because there is a reality that the dealer may not reach their set objective, therefore not getting their payout. It makes perfect sense.

What helps is Mazda cut back production of CX-9's, and dealers have trimmed inventory. There is not the extreme need to move these 08's anymore.

If you cannot get the price you want ($10K off) then do not buy the car! If you can afford to purchase this car, then most likely you do not have to purchase a car today!

Contact a few dealers and make your offer and ask them to contact you when they are ready to move a car. They do not like it much (really cannot blame them), but that is the way it works in a supply and demand system. At some point, Mazda has to give the dealers enough factory to dealer cash to clear the 08 inventory.

Time is on the side of the customer!
