Just bought a new 2008 CX-9 GT MSRP: $34,205 for $10,000 off. It was $25,947 out the door. Very easy transaction, asked for best drive out price and was told pick any CX-9 on the lot, take $10,000 off and add TT&L. It was that easy, no hassle. Dealership was Russell and Smith. Dealt with Internet Sales manager Roy Howard. Very happy with it.

Congrats! It's pretty amazing how the TX area dealers are offering 10k off msrp for any 08 CX-9s. The dealers up here in Northern California will only go that route with a few fully loaded GTs. Anything below a GT seems to only get you max approx 6000 to 7000 off msrp - and that's with the Costco buying program.

Why aren't they serving the Kool-aide up here in Norcal?

Congrats sel0511... I had almost the exact same experience with them a couple days ago, but on the CX-7.

"Pick any 08 CX-7 we have, and take $7K off." Ended up with a base sport for $17K + TTL! As simple as that. No reqd add-ons, etc. Was in-and-out in less than 30 minutes!

Curious, did you opt for the Total Care MEPP? I went ahead and did the 10 yr / 100K for $1300. For add'l accessories, I purchased from Med Center Mazda on the net. They sell for 22 - 25% off list, and no tax / free shipping.

On parts and accessories, Wayne Mazda may actually have better prices than Med Center Mazda. However, if you take S&H into account, the latter may be cheaper. So, it makes sense to cross shop both sites. Just FYI.

Hi derrickson and sel0511,

I am in Houston and is looking at a CX-9 also. Congratulate on your new cars. Just a few questions.

1. Did you just go to Russell and Smith and ask for Roy Howard? or did you ask them to bid though internet first?

2. If they offers $10k off the MSRP, didn't they inflate the MSRP first?

3. How do you know if any new cars in Houston had not being flooded before due to the hurricane ike?

4. Mazda is also offering 0% financing for 60 months. To get the $10k off, I assume that means you can't get the financing deal. Do you have to buy with cash? Can you borrow the money from your bank?

5. How reliable do you think this car is? consumer report has average to below average while JD Power has a rating a 9. Which one do you think is right?

thanks for your answers,

Hey lockloop,

I did all my negotiating online with six different dealerships in the Houston area. Russell and Smith and also Munday mazda offered $10,000 off MSRP. R&S just had the color I wanted. No inflation of the MSRP. Other dearlerships that could not match the price were accusing them of that, but the MSRP on the sticker was exactly what I expectrd after researching online and comparing to other dealerships. No 0% APR if you take the dealer incentive. I would advise you to go in with your own financing(make them have to beat something). It also gives you leverage in negotiating prices of the warranties. They really want you to finance through them and buy a warranty. Did not like the finance games here. Although after arguing with the guy about APR and warrany prices I got the 100,000 mile total care package for 1495 and a 5.75% APR. My problem came when he could magically change my APR from their bank in order to sell the warranty. They are obviously marking up the APR you are approved for by their bank. He actually got out his commisions book and was looking at how he could get me to finance through them and buy a warranty and still make a decent commision. His comment was " we have to make money somehow." Even if you do not want the warranty, act like you do and negotiate a lower APR, then back out of the warranty at the end. Not sure of the legality of the games they play with the APR. EVERYTHING is NEGOTIABLE.

Sel0611,

That is a lot of information there. That was really helpful. I have a few more questions.

When you negotiate online between several dealerships, do you forward the email from one sales person to another to prove you have a better deal? I wonder if that is something ethical to do.

I lives in Clear Lake city, I am not going to Russel and Smith to do any repair work. Therefore, I don't think that extended warranty will do me any good. But why do you feel the need to pay extra for the extended warranty? Is it because you think Mazda's reliability is not that good?

thanks

Lockloop,

The extended warranty is a mazda product and you can have your vehicle serviced at any Mazda dealership. I usually keep my vehicles 8-10 years, that is why I got the extended warranty. Never owned a mazda before, only time will tell their reliability. As for forwarding emails, only Joe Myers and Clear Lake Mazda wanted me to prove it. I sent them the offer. I don't see it being any different then driving from dealership to dealership with written offers.

sel0511,

Thank you so much for your answers. I felt much more confident to start the buying process now. I gained a lot of insight from this exchange.

Sel / Lock ~
I concur with all the comments Sel provided. I did shop various dealers via email, etc, but R&S actually posted a 1/4 page ad in the Houston paper that I was going to get them to follow through on. The offer they advertised was better than any quotes I had received. I did not mention the ad when I arrived, but the sales person offered the same info upfront in-person, so no haggling was req'd.

re: financing - I did not finance, so returned to sign / take delivery w/ a certified check based on the initial sales paperwork... Did this just in case they tried to pull any last minute monkey business ("btw, we add $500 to all cars for Lojack, etc"). I was fully prepared to turn around and walk out. Turns out the paperwork went off w/o a hitch.

sel~ Definitley looks like they played games with the APR / Warranty price. Their warranty pitch to me was, "If you buy warranty tonight, we'll discount the warranty to $100 over cost, or $1300 for the 10 yr/100K warranty." I figured that comes out to about $130/year to cover pretty much everything, so I pulled the trigger. Plus, the warranty is transferrable, so will help should we go to sell. I shopped the warranty online afterwards, since we have 2 days to cancel. Turns out dealers offering "discounts" on the warranty were all around $1300, so I think the price R&S offered was in the hunt. Also looks like the warranty price fluctuates with financing.

Drove by Capital Mazda in Raleigh today, a row of 20 CX-9 in various trims had "up to $8000 off MSRP" slapped on them.

The inspection stickers on the windshields are showing that all of them have been sitting on the lot for over 6 months now. That was curious since I would have hoped to see at least some units with a sticker from Aug/Sep/Oct, but none.

Maybe people are giving preference to buying the more recent units, or maybe Mazda just stopped delivering them after the dealer ran out of space on their lot, but my question is whether anyone knows the effect of leaving a vehicle exposed to the elements without regular usage or special care (leather surfaces, interior exposed to 100o. sun throughout the entire day with closed windows, stale engine fluids, electronic parts, exterior pain, dried up tires, etc) ?

I know $8K is a lot of money, and I know there is warranty, but I wonder if it may be sufficient to compensate for whatever "damage" is being done to those vehicles sitting there for so long.
