Considering the Honda Fit has been around for years, is a proven design, and has a very high quality rating, I'd say that any extended warranty is not worth it.

Plus when you read people posting the cost of extended warranties, you really have to read the fine print of the policies to know what they really cover. Some may say "bumper to bumper" but you still need to read the fine print.

In my previous three cars, only one of them had any major repairs prior to 100,000 miles, and that was for an alternator which cost $500. Plus my cars were not considered "high quality" like the Honda Fit.

The bottom line is that what you're really paying for is the peace of mind that if you have a major repair (engine, transmission, etc) prior to 100,000 miles, then you're covered. Again, I think that with modern cars, and especially high quality ones, that the chances of that happening with the Honda Fit is pretty rare.

Like I said, in my experience if I would have bought extended warranties for each of my past cars, I'd be out at least a thousand dollars as compared to what benefit I would have got from having the extended warranty. Remember, that those selling extended warranties set their price, deductable, and allowable repairs so that they're making more money than they're paying out in claims.

But it's up to you. If you're going to be up a night worrying that you'll have a transmission failure at 36,001 miles, then you may want to get one. You can look at this site http://autos.yahoo.com/honda_fit_sport_5_spd_mt-price/;_ylt=AkSYbWvVPawDfCvUsp_f- - Wqu_Ws8F to give you some estimate of average repair costs over 5 years. But remember, not all of those repair costs would necessarily be covered by any extended warranty you're looking at, plus there is the deductable, so if you had several $100-$200 repairs, you'd get nothing from the extended warranty.

Finally, when someone trying to sell you an extended warranty tries to scare you with a bunch of potentially expensive repair costs, then you know it's time to go somewhere else.

howdy partner,

I just spoke to the honda warranty guy b/c I am buying a fit today. The joke re. the extended warranty is that the 8 yr 120k mile warranty, the first three years, 36k miles are already covered in the purchase price. This is a disgrace and a lie to sell this warranty for 1500 clams. It's really only five years and 90k miles for 1500 clams. How they get away with this type of bald face lie is outrageous. They are lucky they make good cars b/c that is all they do. And that is the only reason I am buying from them. I do not like how this company does business. I had to wait 3 mo's to buy this car that quote: is available for sale. B/c they only made 50,000. What a crock! Hope this helps! I feel they treat their buyers with disrespect and the above are classic examples. Also, you have to follow to the letter the maitanance schedule and hang onto all receipts!

That's how ALL extended warranties work...factory and aftermarket. They all start from the purchase date and are not effective until AFTER the original warranty period ends.

I just purchased my Fit yesterday, and also paid for the extended warranty.

I definately felt pressured, and I gave in (wtf?), as it was only about 20 more dollars a month on my payment. Looking at it the next day though, I paid 1500 dollars for that damn thing. (My deductible is 50 dollars by the way).

The contract is through GE auto warranty services. Do I have 30 days to reconsider this contract? I can't find it in the details of the warranty.

I got screwed huh?

I purchased from College Honda online. I like the Hondacare warranty as it includes a lot fo extras such as towing and trip insurance. The dealer quoted me $1800, but I got it for $735 from College Honda online. 5 years, 100,000 miles, but other arrangements are available...

Geico quoted me an additional 5 dollars a month for the same coverage.

I am planning on making the trip down to the dealership on my next day off to get them to refund my 1500. That should go over well.

Thank you for saving me more than $1,000. I visited your link http://www.hondawarrantyinfo.com/ and received a quote of $460 for a 7/80,000 extended warranty. My dealer charged me $1,665 for 7/70,000.

I then called my dealer to cancel, but was informed that it had been 31 days from my purchase date, so there would be a $50 cancellation fee. Well worth it.

It's not quite that bad. The factory warranty covers only factory defects, whereas the extended warranty covers a lot of other things as well.

As far as the car itself is concerned, I wouldn't bother with the extended warranty. After all, it IS a Honda (and I have over a million miles in Hondas)

But ... according to the finance manager at the dealer where we bought my wife's Fit, having the warranty meant the car was considered less risky by loan companies, and we got a lower interest rate as a result.

I didn't really get to check her numbers, but I _do_ know that with the warranty we'll be paying $345/month for 6 years, while a preliminary estimate at another dealer WITHOUT the warranty was $380/month. So it's possible she was telling the truth.

But if you're paying cash, or have some other financing method (credit union, or fantastic credit card offer), I'd suggest you skip the warranty, especially at the price ($1600-$1800).

FWIW, I've been driving mostly Hondas for the last 23 years, including an '85 Civic wagon which expired at 350,000 miles, and a '92 Civic hatchback which I dumped at 360,000. My experience has been that the quality and long-term life of Honda cars and parts has steadily increased over that time, and I'd expect that trend to have continued to this time.

So I'd expect the fuel pump and alternator to be good for about 250,000 miles, while the CV joint boots typically start to crack at 110-120,000 (replace with genuine Honda boots - aftermarket items last 30-40,000 miles in my experience).

My engines typically wore out at 160-170,000 miles (first engine in the '85 snapped the timing belt, but mechanics said the engine was severely worn), but I think I changed the oil too infrequently (used synthetic oils - and I still do - but I probably shouldn't have believed the oil change intervals the oil manufacturer suggested). After all, my '93 has 187,000 on it now, and the engine is still running strong.

Your transmission should last for the life of the car.

Aside: based on my experience with high-mileage Civics, I'd say the best indicator of engine wear is dryness of the oil pan - the only time I saw copious oil leakage was shortly before overhaul time, leading me to believe that worn rings caused excessive crankcase pressure, which squeezed the oil out past the gaskets. So if you're buying a used Civic, shun any models which are leaking lots of oil.
