OK let's just settle down....
 
It's the obvious winner because of the "new" hybrids in 2006, it is cleanest in it's category - Small SUV. It only had to beat out the Saturn Vue Greenline.
 
It was not competing against all the other hybrids in the world - it's obviously not the "cleanest greenest of them all" but that was not the competition.
 
And it's their "inaugural" award too, which means they are new at awarding "cars of the year."
 
Cut 'em some slack !!

I say good for Ford/Mercury. They need some good news from time to time. The Mariner is too small for my tastes but then I am not alone. When John Kerry, Hillary and Obama give up their Suburbans I may consider a smaller car. Never a Fit or Yaris size car though. I am too selfish to ever squeeze into one of those little death traps.
