Yeah I'm scratching my head on this one too. According to Green Car Journal Online, the Mercury Mariner Hybrid is the 2006 Green Car of the Year.

I really do not understand this. If you go and research this car or SUV at www.fueleconomy.gov you would see this vehicle is rated a 8 on a scale of 10 (10 is best) on the air pollution score. Greenhouse gas emissions? 6.0 tons / year. Heck there's even quite a few non-hybrids that have a better score than this on the .gov site. For example there's Consumer Reports Best Buy rated Honda Fit with a rating of 5.3 tons of Green House Gases (GHG) per year. OK so it's not an SUV, and the pollution score is a little less, but seriously, how much longer will we put up with this masquerade? SUVs are such overkill for what the public uses these for. We've got our young soldiers currently dying so we can carry on in gluttonous ways. Heck not even countries floating on oil carry on this way! Get it? The Honda Fit does a remarkable job for people that need a little more room. For the price of this Mecury you could buy two Fits and fuel them both for a year too! I suggest you check it out before thinking it's not for you.

OK back to this questionable award. So what happen to Prius in this battle for 2006 Green Car of the Year? It's won numerous awards, including some from the fierce European crowds. It's scores are far better than the Mercury and cheaper too. OK it's not a brand spanking new model, but this gets back to our gluttonous American ways. Man there's just one planet and there's limited resources, so something has got to give. One thing for sure, you can't fool mother nature.

One more thing, on the .gov site there's 4 other hybrids that have better ratings than the Mercury, so again, what were you guys smoking or tail pipe next to when you made this decision?

OK let's just settle down....

It's the obvious winner because of the "new" hybrids in 2006, it is cleanest in it's category - Small SUV. It only had to beat out the Saturn Vue Greenline.

It was not competing against all the other hybrids in the world - it's obviously not the "cleanest greenest of them all" but that was not the competition.

And it's their "inaugural" award too, which means they are new at awarding "cars of the year."

Cut 'em some slack !!

I say good for Ford/Mercury. They need some good news from time to time. The Mariner is too small for my tastes but then I am not alone. When John Kerry, Hillary and Obama give up their Suburbans I may consider a smaller car. Never a Fit or Yaris size car though. I am too selfish to ever squeeze into one of those little death traps.
