I am a 2005 CTS owner and have been since 2007. This car is sharp to look at but there is where it ends. I've posted on this site before and have dealt with gmcustomerservice and cadillac about the oil consumption problem and brakeing issues. Part of my brakeing issues were resolved but others still remain. The oil issue is the one that has really upset me the most. GM sent me to my Dealership to have an oil consumption test conducted. They really did not know how to tell me what to do since I had to keep up with checking the oil at every fillup. I had to read the SOP to figure it out myself. When I brought it in to be checked (since it had used oil to the extent that it needed to be filled back after only about 1000 miles) they put it up on a lift to check underneath and told me it had a leak around the timeing chain housing and they couldn't do anything about the oil problem until that was fixed at a cost of $1400. HOW CONVIENIENT!!!!! I've had this car since 2007 and never have I seen a drop of oil anywhere where I park and I park in the same spot every day. I'm 62 years old and have owned multitudes of vehicles in my life and never have I seen an engine use oil like this one. I have a young friend that has purchased a 2005 STS with the same engine. I told her to be aware of the oil problem and to check it often. Well she apparently forgot and one day her car wouldn't start. She called her Dad for advice and he told her to check her oil. Well, low and behold, she was 4.5 quarts low. The same thing had happened to me after my first oil change. GM, what are you going to do about this problem!!!!!!!! I'm not paying $1400 to continue this process when I know that is not where the oil is going!!! Have you not read enough posts from CTS owners to know there is a serious problem!!!!!

I have had the exact same issues. Although I had to resort to installing a used engine, the 3.6L which still eats oil. GM/ Cadillac has been unresponsive to all of these posts and concerns. Sarah (GM Customer Service)has tried to be helpful and understanding, alas, I feel she does not have the power to affect any change in the GM customer service, or lack thereof. I am pretty sure the American people bailed this company out! I am out $4000.00 for a used engine! For anybody that has a CTS (mine is a 2005) get rid of it, before it's too late!

Just an update on this. The dealership returned the car to me 4 days after I brought it in. The dealership could not determine the problem and made an assumption that it was a software issue. The dealership downloaded new software, but did not want to replace the computer. Cadillac corporate customer assistance put me in touch with 2 GM district specialists, one of whom told me that if the problem happens again (and there is a car left after losing all power at 60 mph), that the dealership would look at it. The other GM district specialist told me that I need to have faith that the dealership fixed the problem, even though they could not locate the actual problem. When I bought the car, I had faith that it wouldn't lose all power at 60 mph. Barring identification of the cause of the problem, that's all the faith that Cadillac is getting from me. I filed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which administers recalls, because if I did have a software problem, so too will other 2011 CTS drivers. And I got rid of my 2-month old Cadillac CTS at a significant financial loss, but at least I don't feel as though I'm driving a deathtrap.

The best advice would be to trade it an run before the used car market catches on to the design flaw with the GM V6 motors. I started to buy a Camaro RS until I realized it had the same motor as my 05 STS which was destroyed from the inside out due to this unmanageable oi consumption issue. The only other thing I can think of is to install a "day tank" in the trunk and top it off every time you come home. Good luck.

We have been looking at trading for another vehicle but can't decide on what to buy. Toyota has been on the top of our list and personally would never consider another GM/Cadillac. I really would feel sorry for the next owner of this CTS. Especially if the Dealership doesn't warn the new owner to be sure to check the oil at every fill-up. But, then again, he probably wouldn't sell it if he mentioned that.

The crazy part is that it seems GM has phased out all of its old tech V6 OHV engines (e.g. 3.9, 3.8, 3.5, 3.1, etc.). Although these engines have gasket problems (e.g. intake or head gaskets), once fixed, they typically had no other issues, would last 150k to 200k miles with regular maintenance, and could be serviced by any neighborhood mechanic. Now, and especially with Cadillac, GM has complex, poorly engineered overhead cam engines which fail prematurely and few mechanics know how to fix. This is progress?
 
Last summer, I purchased a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix with 125k miles for $3k. I keep the car at our summer home down south. The car sits 2 to 3 months at a time without being used. Every time we visit our summer home, I start it up and the car fires up right of way, does not burn oil, and gets 28 MPG on the highway. GM really needs to get back to basics.

The KISS concept is lost on most manufacturers these days. Some are still reliable, but they're not well thought of.

well it finally happened my 04 cts with 3.6 broke the timing chain at 111000 miles i hope it did not bend valves , i had just solved my transmission early morning slipping problem by adding Lucas trans treatment,but it can't stand being free of problems, LOL , i will pull engine front cover off to see how bad it is, i have had oil consumption problems with both my cts's with 3.6, and Sarah was the timing chain recall for 2007 only or 2007 and older

Just news from the Cadillac dealership.....4000.00 to fix the engine. Seems it uses 5-6qts of oil every 5000 miles. The engine only has 57,000 miles on it!(2005 Cadillac CTS 3.6L)
 
I was coming back from a 3500 mile trip when the car started missing. Immediately went to the nearest Cadillac dealership. The checked the car out and informed me the oil was "low"...As in NO OIL showing on the dipstick!!
 
I had the oil changed before the trip. Maybe the mechanic didn't put enough back in?
NOPE, he did!
 
Seems "the car is supposed to use oil", according to the manual and the service rep. Well, when they looked up the service records for my car they saw it never went more than 3-5K miles between oil changes, and always at the delership, it had never been serviced anywhere else outside of a cadillac dealer!
 
I thought this was going to be the car I kept for a long time! Looks like I was wrong.
Oh yeah, the car is out of warranty! (and with only 57k on the engine!)
 
I am willing to join a class action lawsuit if comes down to it also!
