I am in Vancouver, Canada and will be driving up to Whistler this weekend for the holidays. I was just told that I need either winter tires or snow chains. Otherwise, the transit authority or police may turn me back and not allow me to go up.
Buying a set of winter tires for my 2004 WRX for one use is quite expensive so I'm inclined to get chains. Do any of you know whether I need chains on all four tires or do I just need a pair? The tire dealer was recommending that I get 2 pairs for AWD, but said I should check w/ Subaru.
I currently have 225/45/17 all-season Toyo Proxes-4 on my WRX. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

One pair should be fine as long as you use the traction devices as intended (on snow, driving at 30mph or less). If you run them, say on dry pavement or go faster, you may run the risk of damaging your center differntial aside from ruining the chains.
You'll also probably need to use cables rather than traditional chains. Cables are much lower profile and will not cause clearance issues.
