I think Volvo (and VW) are screwing up big time by not offering high MPG engine options right now. That diesel sounds great and I would buy one, even though I always swore I would never drive a diesel. Gas prices are not going to go down - ever - and any new car I buy from here on out has to get exceptional mileage. Volvo won't have a diesel until 2010? That might be too late for them - the market will be swarming with high mileage cars by then.

Don't blame Volvo and VW for struggling to get Diesels into the US market as the diesel emissions regulations for the US seem to change every other year.

True, but I think it's a matter of priority within the companies. VW does offer diesels right now - really good ones. The just don't offer them on all models, nor do they import their most efficient models. I think the manufacturers can keep up with the regs, the problem is that their marketing departments can't see the forest for the trees. Plus they all have painted themselves into a corner by constantly upping horsepower almost every year and them convincing people that they can't live a quality life without a 300 horsepower fuel snorter.

VW doesn't offer any diesels right now. They extended 2006 MY diesel production for a little while but they couldn't get a diesel to meet 2007 MY regs fast enough.

Mercedes sort of has diesels in the US but I think for right now they are only 45 state compliant.

Its real simple, people don't buy Volvo's(or VW's) for high fuel economy.
Neither company can compete pricewise w/ the japanese or Korean sub economy cars.
VW's(and esp Volvo's) weigh too much as well.
High mpg cars have to be very lightweight, this compromises their accident performance, esp at higher speeds.
Volvo's get very good gas mileage for their size and mass as it is.

Promise big then under-deliver. There were articles quoting Volvo execs stating that the car would have 270 bhp before introduction into the US markets. Now it's 218? No thanks.

It looks sharp but can't keep up with other cars in it's price range. Again, no thanks.

The American auto industry strikes again... Genius!

Really where did you see someone saying it would have 270 hp. I never read that anywhere and I have been reading about the C30 since it was announced.

A little common sense why would it ever have 270 hp? It is a fwd only vehicle and 270 hp through fwd only is going to be very hard to handle. Even the most bad ass vehicle in this class only has 263 hp and it is a bear to channel all that power through fwd in a little car.

The were NO articles promising 270hp for the production car.
I suggest you do a little research before you bash.
