Premium fuel required? by otis12

C30 1.0 price is AMAZING! Sounds like Volvo decided to listen to feedback and struck a great balance between content and price. One question: does the engine require premium (93 octane)?

As far as I can tell it's going to need premium. At least the mileage numbers should be really good (I figure at least as good as the S40 T5, if not a bit better due to the weight savings).

You should put premium in any forced induction motor. You are just shorting yourself on both horsepower and fuel economy if you don't.

RE: C30 launch...

It might be a while before I can talk to them as I am going to LR2 traning in California on Monday and won't be back for a week.

shifting feel by carnut444

I just took a 15 minute dealer tryout in a Mazda Speed3. The Speed3 message board describes the shifting experience as not a positive feel. I must agree.
Question: How would the C30 transmission shift? I have not tried driving any other Volvos. Certainly the C30 would use the same trans as one of the other models. Any comment from experienced Volvo drivers?

"The C30 is far from unimaginative - look at the back end and profile!!!!!!!! It's four thousand times more imaginative than the Golf or Focus!!!!!!!

It isn't really cramped, either - the two seats in the back are better than those in the MINI anyway!!!

I love it, and is my second favourite car in its class after the Civic. The Nissan Qashqai comes a close third."(link title)

"The C30 is at its best at a cruise. Around town the ride is relatively supple but with an underlying solidity. It’s the same on the motorway, where wind noise is limited and the tremendously leggy gearing (100mph is 2700rpm in top) means the engine is virtually inaudible. Touring economy is also a creditable 48.8mpg." from link title

Yes, the 2.0 diesel would be a good option for this car, especially with all that torque; but you'd lose out on WOT speed and I don't think that anyone who is going to be buying this car is buying it for fuel economy. Still, it might not be a bad idea about the diesel... I just know that I wouldn't buy a diesel C30.

However, I am seriously considering buy the C30 in October (too long to wait!). Glad I never went with the VW hatch... I'd be kicking myself if I had since I just found out about the C30 today while researching hatchbacks for the 2008MY.

Does anyone know how many Volvo will be selling in the US? Is there going to a big empty void of customers wanting to buy cars that aren't on the dealer lots?
