How about another 15HP and a handling package? Then they'd have something!

Go to ipd, Evolve or Heico.
Get the chip and some sway bars.

I guess I have to agree with you. But I don't think they'd have to spend much to give it a bit more pizzazz on the interior and better handling. I also agree with the after-market upgrades, but if they're really trying to compete with the Cooper they need to make that sucker sportier.
As for gettting over $30k, I started with the R Design and added the bluetooth and a few other options (but not the nav system) and I hit $32k in a hurry. You'd think that if they're going to offer a limited-edition model it would come with all the bells and whistles.
I've been spoiled by my '93 Saab Turbo Commemorative Edition. It has all the appointments and accessories, the hot engine and the tight suspension. Of course it listed for $32k in 1993 so point well taken about the $50k BMW.

It's an entry level car that Volvo makes no money on in the US.
They simply can't afford to make any changes. it would push the price of the car beyond what it already is.

The car is an alternative to the Cooper. The Mini is a good looking car, but I couldn't drive one every day.
It's just wayyy to harsh. We have traded for a couple of Coopers already.

R Design isn't a limited issue car, like the original R.
It is merely the replacement for the C30 2.0

Really I didn't know they were replacing the 2.0.

SO there will be the 1.0 and then the R-design models and that is it for right now?

The Volvo website says they will build only 400 R-designs and they call it a "Limited Edition". Maybe just for the US market?

Well, the R-Design is on sale here in U.K. so it's not a "special". We get the C30 with the following engine options :

1.6, 1.8, T5 gassers.

1.6, 2.0, D5 diesels

1.8 Flexifuel E85, (E85 = 85% Bioethanol + 15% gasoline).

The D5 is slightly down-rated from that in the S60, S80, V70, XC70, XC90 etc etc and offers 178bhp/258lbft. C30 + D5 + Geartronic (6-spd) = Yummy. In the bigger cars the D5 gives 185bhp/295lbft..............which is why I love my S60 D5 Geartronic !

No diesels here.
We might see them in the future, however diesel is $1.00/gal more than gasoline

Today my local prices are :

Gasoline : £1.23 per litre

ULSD : £1.29 per litre

So, you see, it's still comparatively cheap for you guys in the Colonies, (sorry, couldn't resist).

And..............Shell tanker drivers have just gone out on a 4 day strike to demand a 13% pay increase as they feel £32k p.a., ($63k ??), is too low and "Shell can afford it". In fact, none are Shell employees; they all work for one of two contract haulage companies.
