Gas Mileage on the 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid by smrekar

I have a little over 5000 miles on my 2007 Merc Mariner Hybrid and the gas mileage is awful. I have been tracking closely for the last 8 gas fills and the average is running in the low 20s. I know the EPA rating is not perfect but this seems way off and not right. The dealer and Merc just seem to shrug their shoulders. Is there anything that can be done about this?

How fast are you driving? by krunchyfrogg

I just bought my '06 Mariner a little over a week ago, but I'm consistently getting between 27 and 32 MPG.

I do a lot of highway driving (about 100 mi/day).

I notice the milage is significantly worse before the car is warmed up when I first start up.

I try to keep the car at, or about 5 miles above the speed limit (55 and 65 on the highways I take).

BTW, I still need a navigation CD. Navteq says it's a 6 CD set, but that doesn't sound right. Anybody know where I can get one?

Makes no difference. The mileage is bad at highway speed or in the city using mostly the battery. I have tried to get the best possible mileage by not accelerating fast, etc but to no avail. 18-22 mpg is all I can get. Any recourse to this? Rebates, new car, money back that anyone has heard?

Don't know where to get a NAV system.

If your not accelerating fast or slamming on your brakes, then your doing the "women style driving" which is this. Driving down the road and the person in front of you is making a right turn - now men go around w/o slowing down, for women they slow down and then speed right back up after the person has completed the turn, doing this w/o changing lanes. That is why men get better gas mileage then women on average. So maybe you will want to change you're driving habits.

That's kind of like saying that women are better spellers than men.

Seriously, I think we should avoid such generalizations. Some would even say that All generalizations are false.

Are you carrying a lot of extra weight in the car (full of passengers, just crap in the trunk)?

Mileage and navigation by wvujeb

The hybrid system doesn't work as well in the winter because the engine must stay warm. It will run until it hits 140F and will kick back on if it drops below 120F regardless of your speed. See if your mileage improves as the weather warms up.

The navigation system does use 6 CDs. The maps are broken into regions. If you need to travel a great distance, say NYC to Chicago, then you will need multiple CDs and will have to compute multiple routes. The navigation in the '06 and '07 is a POS.

You can say that again! Still, a POS is better than no navigation at all.

Unfortunately, with the '08 switching to DVD navigation, I'd be surprised if we ever see an upgrade in the CD navigation us '07 and earlier owners have.
