Hello,   Well not 10K goes by with something new, now my battery died on me, fine it was a 2000 GMC jimmy with about 98K on it, so I replace the battery, but there is this humming whirrling sounds coming from the front end, I open the hood, its impossible to pin point due to engine noise, but could it be the ALTERNATOR? When I start it up its running around 12V if i hit the accelerator it shoots up to 14V? as well my odometer digital readout is dims then goes bright when the vehicle is idling, but when im driving with the accelerator pressed its nice and bright, anyone please help, I hate having to pay those GM wrench monkies $80 an hour to tell me everything is fine.... Replying to: mikesmith06 (Aug 20, 2006 11:06 am) As well everytime I start my 2000 Jimmy the gas tank goes to full, then when I start driving it stablizes a bit but never less than 3/4's? could this fuel sending unit be messed up with the going of the alternator...... Replying to: mikesmith06 (Aug 20, 2006 11:06 am) If you just replaced the alternator check the 2 pulley up front - the fixed idler and the spring loaded tensioner - all go by 100k so remove the belt and spin them and that should tell you.

Replying to: mikesmith06 (Aug 20, 2006 11:09 am) If it did not do it before could be. Did you install it yourself and connect the main positive cable before the plug in connector so its polarized right. Is your battery good. 12.6 volts with engine off then 13.5 to 14 at idle from alternator.

I had the battery replaced about a month ago, then about 2 weeks after that the same humming noise started. Along with the 12V at startup, then going up to 14 when I accelerate. I put on about 170000 miles on it before this started happening. Did you ever figure out what the fix for this was before I plunk down a bunch of $$$$. Replying to: weems2k (May 02, 2007 1:56 pm) Pull the alternator and have it checked. Sounds like a bad diode bridge which can take out the voltage regulator. These two things combined can take out a battery, too. An alternator with 100K should be considered a maintenance item. Bearings, brushes both will not be in good shape.

For the first 20 minutes of driving, everything appears fine. After that, when I acclerate from a stop light there is a rumbling/clunking noise possibly from the rear, its hard to tell, transfer case maybe? I have no idea. It makes no difference whether I'm turning, and appears to go away when i get up to speed. The longer I drive the worse it gets. Not so much around town, but highway for a period and then when i'm back in town its very evident. Any clues?
