#343 of 1066 Shifter won't shift by smithed

2005 rear wheel (2X4) v6

Today wouldn't shift into park, RND were fine. I drove it home.

Now won't shift out of R. Can't get it into neutral to start it. Shifter will move down to N and D, but remains in R. Will not go into P.

Thanks for any ideas.

Hi. I'm having a very similar problem to yours, and wondering if you've been able to diagnose your problem? I have a 2004 grand cherokee, and sometimes when I roll to a stop, it shifts into second gear (just before coming to a complete stop), so when you take off again, it takes off in 2nd gear. After you get up to 20-30 MPH, it then shifts into 3rd, and everything's fine again, until I stop, and then the same thing all over again. Any ideas or information for me?
Thanks....M.T.

#345 of 1066 97 GC limited transmission shifting by jrb11

97, bought it new, luv the truck, have religiously maintained it. At 110k miles, when shifting from 1st to 2nd ... feels like a pulsating feeling, kind of jerking, goes into 2nd ... and from there everything is fine. Recently, in last couple thousand miles, full fluid & filter changed. Any clues? Saw one other message about TPS, what is TPS?

Hello Forum

I recently purchased a 2006 JGC 4x4 automatic about two weeks ago. The vehicle has 59K miles on it.

After 2-3 days, I noticed that the shifting was somewhat erratic - it is difficult to explain the symptoms, but I will try.

When accelerating, and the vehicle reaches about 35-40 MPH, and the RPM is around 1500, it seems to "stick" or shudder before accelerating more - as if the transmission is stuck. If I am going up a hill, it will sometimes shudder or surge a bit, as it gets through this area.

Also, around 60-65 MPH Ive noticed a similar surging.

Often, it seems Ill be driving along, and I will need to increase my speed very slightly, so I slightly depress the gas, and the vehicle seems to stick and start to lost power and surge - again, it "feels" like the transmission. It seems, especially around these problem points, to shift inefficiently at points where power is lost.

In general, the driving experience is awful, because it seems like I have to keep fighting the transmission - I have to accelerate more to get past these sticky spots, and then Im going a little too fast, so I have to coast and slow down, while the transmission has to jump around while doing so, and it never seems to shift where I would shift if I was driving a manual.

There are no engine lights, no warnings.

I did take it to a "transmission specialist" who test drove it with a scan tool, and he said he did feel a "slight slippage" (he thought) and did indicate he eventually saw a scan code indicating a slippage. He was going to start dissassembling the transmission, but at that point, I decided to take it back to the (Mazda) dealer, and have them try to diagnose it and work with the warranty company directly. (They told me to bring it back next week)

But after browsing through some of the forum, I have seen a few posts mentioning similar symptoms - specifically one that indicated nearly identical symptoms at 35-40 MPH and 60-65MPH that turned out to be a "Throttle Position Sensor"

My question is - if it -IS- the throttle position sensor, would occasional "slippage" scan codes show up, without an engine light warning?

The problems are just subtle enough that its difficult to get a service tech to really understand them, and I am afraid of having to go through months of trying to get someone to recognize the problem, and not just say "Jeeps just drive like that" which I know is not true (this is my 3rd)

The jeep is great, otherwise - like new.

I have an extended warranty (Easy Care/Total Care) that should cover things - assuming someone actually can diagnose it correctly.

Does anyone have any advice for getting this diagnosed and repaired competently?

How much does it cost to replace a TPS, if I was willing to just "try it"?

It probably doesnt matter, but it is a 2005 JGC, not a 2006. Any help would be appreciated.

I dont know if you are still around, troll157, but I would like to ask you some more questions about your solution of changing out the O2 sensor and TPS.

My JGC is having difficulty at precicely those two spots.

I am having the exact same problems and I have tried to narrow it down. I bought a Actron CP9125 and hooked it up to my 2005 Jeep grand cherokee. It told me I had a P0700 and U0404. Code P0700 = Trans control malfunction.
Code Uo404 = Invalid data received from control module gear shift. This means Trans Control Sys malfunction. From what I have googled so far that means that there is a problem with the computer that shifts the tranny. I have seen two solutions. Replace the shifter bezel in the jeep (makes the most sense - replace the computer) and replace a few filters in the tranny (seems like BS). I did find that both of these fixes are in TSB's (Technical service bulletin) 21-016-06a and 21-007-06. I would think it would be smart to do both actions. I am not sure if either of these are covered by the original warranty 36K / 3 Year or the 7/ 70 K drivetrain. 3/36 should cover it. I of course am at 50K. Does anyone know if the drivetrain warranty covers a shifter bezel or TCM? I am going to go into the dealer and see what they tell me. I have a feeling I will be going somewhere else to fix it since dealers usually try and get you. BTW, I had a high whining noise at about 60 mph when I had 30K on the truck and they replaced the whole drive shaft under warranty (this is under a different TSB I think). I believe this will be the last piece of junk jeep I ever buy. Cash for clunkers anyone?

#351 of 1066 Shifting problems with 1994 Jeep GC by brentdh187

Hello,

My problem: 1994 Jeep with 155k miles had a new tranny installed less than 15k ago and now when I take off from park and if I get on it a bit it won't shift The engine revs up but the tranny just kinda hesitates and I have to let off the gas to get it to shift. Going up a steeper hill at 55 it will try to kick down but once again just kinda hesitates there will lose 8-9 mph by the time I get to the top. Talked to place that put in tranny and of course they want mega $ just to check it out because the warranty in up. But the guy said maybe the governor pressure sensor or solenoid even the crankshaft postion sensor? Any ideas? Thanks
