i shopped for a new car last august and I test drove a TON of cars. so yes I drove them all and lots, lots more.

a small selection of what I drove.

audi a3
vw mkv gti
honda fit
honda civic hybrid
honda civic si
nissan sentra
subaru impreza 2.5i
subaru impreza wrx
subaru impreza sti
mazda3
mazdaspeed3
mazdaspeed6
mini cooper s jcw

some of them i drove 3 times or more, to get a complete feel for the car. many of them i drove in multiple trims.

weirdest dealer experience ever: the dealer would let me drive gti's all day but wouldn't let me touch a mkv rabbit

The only cars from that list that I seriously considered were the Mazdaspeeds and the GTI. The local VW dealer wasn't interested in special ordering a car and their service deparment has a legendary reputation for incompetence, so I scratched it off the list early on. I came real close to buying a CPO E46 M3, but I finally went with the MS3 because I wanted to try something a bit different and off the wall- and I'll probably roll the money I saved into an E28 M5...

Most experience with the Mazdaspeed's, and WRX's

My brother and best friend currently own Mazdaspeed6's (one with CP-E ems, CAI, Turbo back exhaust currently running 1/4 at 12.81 at 105mph.)

Yup, don't get me wrong though, I have no delusions that I could outrun a Porsche, or EVO. I know this though, this thing handles tight turns better than a 3-series. Just an observation. IMO.

thanks for the dyno info, but the lap times from DIFFERENT magazines are kind blah....to many variables and now we are getting into real technical kinda stuff.

to sum up all of my thoughts, my first choice would be a gti as i feel it to be the most balanced, and many would agree.

if i couldn't find a gti, id go with an si sedan, as it is a great handler, has a pure driving experience and plays upon honda's greatest qualities as an automaker.

i'd take a volvo c30 before i settled for a ms3, heck i'd even settle for a regular 3 hatch before a speed 3. its just does not have the kind of... well, 'certain something' that i'm looking for.

call me crazy, as the numbers show that it does have it where it counts, but there are plenty of si and gti drivers who agree with me.

thats fine, but aside from my statements that were with regards to what I would buy, nothing was really arguable.

Yeah, it is pretty quick. I will agree with you about the exahust note. But, that's what aftermarket stuff is all about!

i considered the gti, but the extreme negative feedback from the mk5 owners at my work (major electrical issues, almost all of them have spent lots of time in the repair shop) it appears vw has not improved reliability over the mk4. that shot it down for me. too bad really because i liked the dsg. no good if it's always in the shop though!

kind of sad that my friend's mk3 vr6 is way more reliable than any mk5 golf.

vw is redesigning the mk5 golf 'cause they are losing money on them, maybe vw will finally improve reliability in the next version.
