[Gill] I was told it was the Optima, but I don't know exactly where I got that information.

ESC light and locked gear shift by rondo3

I had a 2004 Optima-which I loved so much, never a problem with it. For many reasons, I bought the Rondo. I have taken it in for the same thing twice and about to take it again as the gear shift locks at least 3 times a week and the ESC light comes on, causeing the thing to sound like it is going over a brick road, it grinds to a halt. After nearly being wiped out by a semi truck on Saturday past, I am totally angered by this. I love driving the Rondo, love the usability, it is fantastic for my elderly parents to get in and out of. But, what good is it if I have to spend 2 days a week trying to get the thing fixed? What good is it if I get slammed into by a semi when the ESC thing goes wacky? I have a good relationship with the dealership and the service deptartment, absolutely wonderful guys, but this may ruin the relationship.
AGH!

[Gill] Well, that is certainly no fun at all and quite vexing. Things do go wrong occasionally, but before I would take an ax to the car, may be the more pragmatic position would be to find another service facility because the one you are going to obviously can't or won't fix the issue. Also, another suggestion might be to engage the factory through the complaint mechanism. I haven't had any complaints, but I have used that facility to get additional information and I always get a return call the same day I submit my issue.

I was particular on color and options and local dealers were not willing to deal so I flew 600 miles to get my Rondo. 2007 gray with gray, EX, V6, Premium, Leather, 50/50 3rd Row Seat, crossbars, and carpetted mats -- $21,887 after $750 rebate. Compares to 21,320 invoice, 23,040 MSRP, and 22,117 Edmunds TMV. So getting the exact color and package I wanted at $230 less than Edmunds TMV and $567 above invoice felt like a good deal. Dealer in Wilmington NC offered my 4th and 5th choice color at full MSRP + $250 and no wiggle room.

Dave at Monroeville KIA was great!

I love this vehicle. Rondo is a true one of a kind. Only Rondo and Mazda5 met all my requirements and Mazda5 was about 2 grand more, had one less seat, looked more minivan-ish and has no ESC (which I think is a must).

How did I do on Negotiating my Rondo? by lvthatmouse

I have read this whole thread, and it seems like most Rondo owners have been in the south. I am from NY and was wondering what the experiences have been there. I negotiated (hopefully well) for an Urban Gray, EX V6,cloth, third row, premium package for $19,869 (with $1500 rebates). I didn't want the third row sine we only have one child- would rather have the storage of a 5 seater, but the dealer said it was difficult to locate a 5 seater since most demand comes for a 7 seater. He offered to split the cost on invoice for this, so I received the extra row for $213. Since today is the 4th, most banks are closed, so I will know tomorrow what my options are for the financing. I traded in our Sedona and was offered 9,500. Asked for 9,700 - they came back at 10,200 if I took the Rondo last night. Told them I would place a refundable deposit on it and waited for their call today. They did come back at a laughable 72 month rate, so I said no thank you. Called back and offered 10,500 on the trade in and lease it. Told them no go on the lease, but thank you for increasing my trade in. As I said most banks are closed today, so they will call me at work tomorrow with the final numbers. Hope they come through b/c I really loved driving the car and a Rav 4 or CRV is out of my price range.

I'm going through the same decision making process here, but one option I just came across may change my mind on the Rondo. If you can get over the looks, the new Scion xB offers many of the amenities of the Rondo. Of course, it only offers a 4-cylinder, but it's the tried and true 2.4L DOHC VVT-i Camry engine, and the price before TTL is $17,500. I'd been set on the Rondo, but after having driving the 2008 xB, I'm having second thoughts as the room inside the xB is amazing and the ride is quite supple, unlike the previous generation xB.

I have a friend that has a Scion xB, but I can't get past how it looks. Hate it! I really want a sunroof also, and I don't believe they offer one. She loves hers, but I guess that is why there is a car out there for everyone's tastes.

>I have read this whole thread, and it seems like most Rondo owners have been in the south. I am from NY and was wondering what the experiences have been there.
[Gill] Look for comments on the Optima since it is the same running gear and engine.

>I negotiated (hopefully well) for an Urban Gray, EX V6,cloth, third row, premium package for $19,869 (with $1500 rebates).
[Gill] I don't have my figures in front of me right now since I am remote. However, look at the figures Edmonds gives you as they are accurate for the options you are getting. That will get you to the whosale price. Now, from that price, add $150 for advertising (sometimes called wholesale reserve) and add for transportation. This gets you to invoice price. There is about $650 dealer profit in that whosale price. Since this is the end of the model year, there are some hidden incentives to move stock. I purchased in the last two days of the first quarter and I got $1,099 off invoice on a LX I-4. If the dealer made his numbers for the quarter, he would have made about $300 on the deal. Also, check the KIA site for the current rebate, $1500 seems a little high to me.

>I didn't want the third row sine we only have one child- would rather have the storage of a 5 seater, but the dealer said it was difficult to locate a 5 seater since most demand comes for a 7 seater.
[Gill] That information is not entirely correct. Start checking dealer stock on-line and you will see far more 2 row than 3 row seating. If you can't use the 3 row, fold it down into the floor.

>Hope they come through b/c I really loved driving the car and a Rav 4 or CRV is out of my price range.
[Gill] Hold out as long as you can. It is better to negotiate up than down.

The $1500 is correct. I am getting 2 "rebates". One is $750 Kia rebate, the other is the $750 incentive for previous owners b/c I have a sedona. I missed the last day of month/fourth of july sale b/c my husband was at work late. They were offering double rebates! I called and spoke with our salesman and he said to come in monday and we would get invoice price. Even gave us invoice on premium package. According to Edmunds, I am under what the TVM price was in my area.

I plan on folding the 3rd row and just using it in a pinch for when I have more than 3 of my daughters friends in the car, since she can sit in the front passenger seat. I figured for $213 it can come in handy at times - probably more so than the storage under the seat.

What do you mean with negotiating up? Even though the car has been priced out I can get lower?

Bought mine on July 4th. by jodienda

Ever since I started reading Edmunds.com forums, I've been getting really great deals on my last 3 vehicle purchases. Here's what I did on my Rondo:

I bought the LX 4 cynlinder with the Convenience package and floor mats priced at $18,880 MSRP. I negotiated the price of the car down to $17,200. I qualified for the $750 owner loyalty plus the $500 rebate combined with 2.9 % financing. That put the price of the car at $15,950 after all rebates and at $16,978 out the door (tags, processing, tax, etc). So out the door, I got $1902 off sticker which I don't think is too shabby. The crazy thing was the general manager actually showed me a sheet with his actual cost (not invoice) to prove that he couldn't go any lower when I tried to knock a little more off. His actual cost on the vehicle was $16,950 so he made a $250 profit on it.

With all that being said, I had a couple questions. The particular car I bought had one of those dealer markup stickers on it. The charged a $4000 "market adjustment" plus $500 for detailing the car and $299 for vin sketching or something like that. That made the actual sticker on the car over $24,000 for an LX!!! I told the sales guy right away I wasn't paying that and that's when I made my offer. My question is that do people really look at that and pay it without asking questions? Just seems like that would be illegal to inflate the price of a vehicle so much.

My 2nd question is that I used to have 2004 Kia Optima (loved it by the way) that got traded in when I bought my Toyota Yaris (I have a long commute to work so I needed something with better gas mileage, still miss the optima). I still had the original sales paperwork and that's what I took to them to get the rebate. When I got home, I read on the Kia website that you have to be a "current" owner of a kia to qualify for the loyalty. The dealer said everything was cool just with the sales order, but I'm wondering if Kia runs a check on the VIN to see if you are still a "current" owner. My fear is that they'll contact me asking for $750 if they see that the car was transferred to another owner before I purchased the Rondo. Thoughts?

Thanks so much! Edmunds rocks!
