The Kia Ronda is on my car list for our next car. I really liked driving the Sedona (rental) and was surprised that it its not so minivanish. Anyway, Does anybody know which Kia model does the Rondo share the same engine, chassis and transmission? What I want to find out actually if there are some long running models using a similar or same platform who have might have engine or transmission problem before.
Thanks in advance!

If I'm not mistaken it's the Optima.

I haven't had this windshield cleaning issue with the Rondo, but did with our VW Passat.

It happened after I took it thru an automatic car wash and had 'hot wax' applied. The wax created a film on the windshield that caused streaking, etc., as you described in your post.

The fix I found was a windshield polish at the auto parts store. I contained tiny abrasive particles that stripped off the film and eliminated the streaking.

Might not be the same cause of your problem, but you might try the polish as a solution.

Yeah, the Rondo is based on the Optima (or Magentis in Canada and the rest of the world). According to this review from Canada's national newspaper, the Globe and Mail:

In fact, the Rondo rides on the basic mechanical underpinnings of the 2007 Kia Magentis sedan. And those mechanical bits are shared with the Hyundai Sonata and Azera. I mention this because Consumer Reports says the Sonata and Azera are among the most reliable cars you can buy. This Kia is coming from what appears to be a good place.

These tidbits from Automobile.com might also be helpful:

Instead, its been based off the much larger D-Segment, or midsize Magentis, though its been extensively modified with a big chunk of the wheelbase surgically removed. Kia also designed a new multi-link rear suspension for the Rondo with a compact spring and damper design, allowing for a low lift-over height for the cargo bay, not to mention space for the third row of seats.

The Rondo will be offered with two engines, a 2.4-liter inline-four that makes 162 hp and 164 lb-ft of torque, as well as a 2.7-liter V6 that nets an additional 20 horsepower and 18 lb-ft of torque, both of which are borrowed from the larger Magentis sedan. The four is of the Chrysler-Hyundai-Mitsubishi "World Engine" variety, which means variable valve timing, four valves per cylinder and all that jazz. The six is a thoroughbred Korean powerplant, and an unusual offering. The Rondo is the only vehicle in the segment that offers anything more than four cylinders, let alone this level if power. Both engines are also automatic-only, the four gets a four-speed while the six gets an extra cog. Both gearboxes have a manual mode.

As for long-term reliability of these engines or vehicles that the Rondo is based on, I haven't really looked much into that.

[Gill] I was told it was the Optima, but I don't know exactly where I got that information.

ESC light and locked gear shift by rondo3

I had a 2004 Optima-which I loved so much, never a problem with it. For many reasons, I bought the Rondo. I have taken it in for the same thing twice and about to take it again as the gear shift locks at least 3 times a week and the ESC light comes on, causeing the thing to sound like it is going over a brick road, it grinds to a halt. After nearly being wiped out by a semi truck on Saturday past, I am totally angered by this. I love driving the Rondo, love the usability, it is fantastic for my elderly parents to get in and out of. But, what good is it if I have to spend 2 days a week trying to get the thing fixed? What good is it if I get slammed into by a semi when the ESC thing goes wacky? I have a good relationship with the dealership and the service deptartment, absolutely wonderful guys, but this may ruin the relationship.
AGH!

[Gill] Well, that is certainly no fun at all and quite vexing. Things do go wrong occasionally, but before I would take an ax to the car, may be the more pragmatic position would be to find another service facility because the one you are going to obviously can't or won't fix the issue. Also, another suggestion might be to engage the factory through the complaint mechanism. I haven't had any complaints, but I have used that facility to get additional information and I always get a return call the same day I submit my issue.

I was particular on color and options and local dealers were not willing to deal so I flew 600 miles to get my Rondo. 2007 gray with gray, EX, V6, Premium, Leather, 50/50 3rd Row Seat, crossbars, and carpetted mats -- $21,887 after $750 rebate. Compares to 21,320 invoice, 23,040 MSRP, and 22,117 Edmunds TMV. So getting the exact color and package I wanted at $230 less than Edmunds TMV and $567 above invoice felt like a good deal. Dealer in Wilmington NC offered my 4th and 5th choice color at full MSRP + $250 and no wiggle room.

Dave at Monroeville KIA was great!

I love this vehicle. Rondo is a true one of a kind. Only Rondo and Mazda5 met all my requirements and Mazda5 was about 2 grand more, had one less seat, looked more minivan-ish and has no ESC (which I think is a must).

How did I do on Negotiating my Rondo? by lvthatmouse

I have read this whole thread, and it seems like most Rondo owners have been in the south. I am from NY and was wondering what the experiences have been there. I negotiated (hopefully well) for an Urban Gray, EX V6,cloth, third row, premium package for $19,869 (with $1500 rebates). I didn't want the third row sine we only have one child- would rather have the storage of a 5 seater, but the dealer said it was difficult to locate a 5 seater since most demand comes for a 7 seater. He offered to split the cost on invoice for this, so I received the extra row for $213. Since today is the 4th, most banks are closed, so I will know tomorrow what my options are for the financing. I traded in our Sedona and was offered 9,500. Asked for 9,700 - they came back at 10,200 if I took the Rondo last night. Told them I would place a refundable deposit on it and waited for their call today. They did come back at a laughable 72 month rate, so I said no thank you. Called back and offered 10,500 on the trade in and lease it. Told them no go on the lease, but thank you for increasing my trade in. As I said most banks are closed today, so they will call me at work tomorrow with the final numbers. Hope they come through b/c I really loved driving the car and a Rav 4 or CRV is out of my price range.
