Anyone care to opine whether GM can make Caddy the world standard again? I mean, I enjoyed the 80's too, but what have they done for me lately?

(glad you liked 'em Fin).

GM CAN make Caddy the standard of the world...if they keep buying foreign companies like Holden who know how to produce excellence (remember THAT motto??). Can't....err, do not want it enough yet as I see it. There is some indication that pot is boiling but I remain skeptical.

Good values as sofas on wheels, however. Sadly, the top luxury benchmarks remain overseas.

Top Luxury Benchmarks Overseas? by lemko

Except for Lexus, (which has about as much soul as a paper plate) the foreign luxury benchmarks are perfect for the rich masochist who's too proud for whips and chains. I sat in an Audi A8 at the Philadelphia Auto Show. The car seemed to be extremely well-built, had a sumptuous interior, and an arrogant demeanor. However, I'd be positively terrified of this car when it is out of warranty. It would probably bankrupt Bill Gates!

It depends on what you mean by "world standard".

What no one seems to grasp is that when Cadillac won the Dewar Trophy for "standards", the Ford Model T could have won it just as easily. Cadillac did not enter the competition, but rather an english car salesman, who happened to like what Leland was doing with Cadillac, entered the Cadillacs in the competition. The idea was to get some of the European car manufacturers to enter the competition too, but none of them did.

any modern car, with all of the electronically controlled stuff, can bankrupt anyone if it all goes wrong, and your car is in the shop $4,000 per week for a few weeks. Someone posted that her SRX (still under warranty) had been in the shop for a total of 52 days (more than 7 weeks = ~$30,000).

Geeze, you'd think they'd just give up on it at a certain point and just give her a new car.

I wouldn't want anyone's luxury car out of warranty these days, Cadillac included. I might be willing to take my chances on an M45, though, if I got a sweetheart deal on a good one.

She bought it used with the 6 year/100000 mile certified warranty. They have tried to get her to trade for a newer one, but not even up and they don't claim that the other one won't be just as bad. However, the problem has been fixed more than once, so the vehicle has not been in the shop continually for the whole time. It may now be fixed, as she has not returned to say that it broke down again. On the other hand, very few people post in the SRX forum, and most do not return to post more than once or twice.

The Only Luxury Car... by lemko

...I'd truly be comfortable out of warranty is a Buick Park Avenue or Lucerne. It sucks to think of any modern luxury car as a "throwaway item" once it is out of warranty. I would love to keep my new Cadillac DTS Performance as long as my 1989 Cadillac Brougham, but it just doesn't seem to be in the cards from what I'm reading here. I'd hate to think of my old ride victimizing a person of modest means looking for some "cheap bling" in the future. The BHPH lots in the Lower NE of Philadelphia are full of lots filled with out-of-warranty luxury cars seeking new victims.

I don't think of a Park Avenue or Lucerne as a "luxury" car any more than, say, an Avalon or an Azera. Given the widespread woes with Dexcool and bad gaskets and intakes, I'd be deeply wary of anything with the 3800 V6 that wasn't meticulously documented.

Luxury cars aren't necessarily throwaways, but their demand for costly parts and maintenance usually exceeds most people's wallets and patience. Things can quickly reach a point where your time and money is better applied to leasing a new one and letting the manufacturer pick up the tab on maintenance.
