Passing at passing speeds when I already have the engine above 4000 rpm, sorry, I'll take the Acura. You seem to be concentrating on acceleration alone. The Acura didn't beat the X5 and match Porshe, on acceleration alone. So it "feels" slow to you. It may not to others. Meanwhile, the numbers and facts, things that are immune to "feelings" say different. Things that set the MDX apart from the others, other than value. 1. SH-AWD - its very underated at this point, but its the main reason it was competitive with the X5 and the Porshe on the track. 2. Sport Suspension - Second Reason 3. Tech Package - Sorry...even without the touch screen, I'll take the Acura's navi and ELS sound system(I think Edmunds.com agrees) over the others any day. Not everyone is looking for your "feeling" and will find a lot to like about the MDX other than "value".

I still believe that Japanese (Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus and Nissan/Infiniti - Best SS of the bunch) vehicles still have a ways to go to compete with the likes of BMW, Audi and Porsche. Tech Package - I have to say Honda makes the best NAV. Bottomline, It is value if you lump all those items you listed. If the X5, Q7, Cheyenne, FX and MDX all cost the same, will the MDX be the SUV of choice?...Value gets the buyers through the doors for them.

It really is quite satifying to drive, at least in the Sport model. Reminds me of a lower-torque version of my '03 BMW 540i Sport in rotation and body control. Pretty impressive.

If they did cost the same, and you took all the badges off the vehicles and did not have a predetermined bias towards any manufacturer....the one with the items I mentioned would be a very competitive vehicle and would sell well. Period.

There are many ways to measure performance. Some like to jump off stop lights. Others like to carve canyon roads at high speeds. Based on what I've read, I'd say the MDX is among the best when the road gets twisty. However, it's probably mid-pack when it comes to boulevard warfare. Given that most of the other V6-equipped competitors out there are not any better at the lights, I don't see this as a problem. Not offering a V8 as many others do will hurt the Acura a bit. But based on the history of this segment, I don't see it being a problem for *most* of the buyers. For a while, Acura will sell as many as they can build. |
