1996 voyageur electrical nightmare by raybear1954

Im reding the forums here and do not find any answers to my problems. First this winter, my rear wiper stopped functiong, and the Air bag light lit up. Wiper doesnt work still, and the air bag light is still on. Next, just a while ago, I found my left head light on all the time, on high beam. The only way to stop it was to remvoe the fuse under the hood. With this happening, I have no more radio, no more running light, and no more interior lights. I have spent good money to recondition this mini van, and now find myself faced with another huge expense to repair this. Im told by an electrical specialist it can be fixed a t a cost of about $1,000.00, and its not the first one they fix one.
Can anybody clarify any of this, or all of it. Any suggestion or experts in Montreal that can help me?
Thanks, anything helpful would be greatly appreciated.

1998 Dodge Grand Caravan - Computer by adams135

Help !!

Every now and then all my gages go dead and my SBS lights on the panel. … I am fairly certain it is the computer.

Almost always it happens when I first start the van …. Once however they went deal when I hit a big bump.

Most of the times if I restart the van they start working however it seems that has stopped. Now it is a hot or miss if they work or not.

Do you think I might have a loose connection on the computer?

Exactly where is the computer located and how can I get to it?

Any and all suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

More than likely your computer is just fine. Most often than not the problem you are describing can be traced to the soldered connections on the instrument panel. A bit of history here; some time prior to 1998, the federal government mandated the removal of lead from solder, and as such the companies had to migrate to a different kind of metal composite for their solder. It was kind of a hit and miss thing, and many vehicles, not just those from Chrysler, suffered weird electrical problems that could be traced to the solder used.

In your case, the fix that usually cures such problems is to remove the instrument cluster and take a hot soldering iron and "touch" each solder point for a moment or two, thus re-liquefying the solder and then re-setting it. Based upon the posts that I've read here and on other automotive related web sites, this "fix" is roughly 80% effective on the first try.

Keep us posted.

Best Regards,
Shipo

Thank You!!!!! Thank You Soooo Much for the advice on the A/C recaliboration test. Worked like a charm... Just one more question....when the lights started blinking yesterday, the van wouldn't start. I was leaving on a trip about 60 miles away. I was a gas station right next door to an Advanced Auto. I had one of their employees run a scan on the main port, and it showed nothing. He mentioned the check engine light had to be on for the scanner to work...hhmm.. Anyway, I checked the fusable links under the dash, and all seemed good The van started after I shifted in to neutral (to push it to the curb) and back in to park.....I went on my trip and it started everytime after that........Any thoughts? Thanks again.....

This has happened 3 times to Pop's 95 mini van. Worse, it happened at night last time and he called AAA who pulled the fuse!

It seams the horn will start to honk for no reason. Not: honk honk honk but rather one long continuous: Hooooooooooooooooooooooooonk! It usually happens after bad rain. Last time AAA pulled the fuse for him. He pushed it back in the next morning and it was fine.

He does not have keyless entry nor an alarm.
Is this thing possessed? Ideas?
