92% of Prius owners said they would buy another, leading the satisfaction rankings. That's one devoted group of folks. Poor DCX only had 4 of its models on the recommended list. No wonder Mercedes and Chrysler are thinking of going their separate ways. A full decade after the "merger", inventories are bloated, the product mix is all wrong, and both brands are coming off years of vehicles with pretty poor reliability, and net losses. I also note that the Jetta continues to be at the bottom of the reliability list - will VW never learn? It's kind of a comfort to hear that GM's specialties, big trucks, are well-executed enough to get the CR awards - they are both reliable AND satisfying, a double whammy - take that, Ford! I am not sure how well a stead their big trucks will stand them in if the gas prices continue to yo-yo though. Now that they have delivered a well-built, well-liked product, it's time for GM to move on through the ranks to continually updating the Caddy line (STS scoring poorly by some measures, and the DTS still a FWD septegenarian's land whale) and the rest of the cars as well, while getting Epsilon II and Gamma out there, as well as the new RWD platform, without compromising reliability and quality. |

Attached link is for the last annual JD Power owners survey via "Top Gear" magazine. Makes interesting browsing. As you'd probably expect, Japanese cars come out on top, (mainly), but some of the supposedly Prestige marques fare badly............again, probably no great surprises. Sorry, but US cars are largely absent; for reasons you'll doubtless understand. Enjoy. link title

NEW YORK — In a stunning and embarrassing revelation, Consumer Reports on Thursday said it is retracting its recent scathing report on infant car seats because of faulty test procedures. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=119271 What this means to me: The consumers bible really fumbled the ball in the end zone for a safety. Replying to: nippononly (Nov 15, 2006 1:05 pm) Have you met some of them? Living where we do, I'd reckon you know maybe two or three, Nippon. I know four owners personally. Most automotively benighted pack of socially-concious granola hounds I've ever met, though bright and wonderful folks every one. Berkeley, Piedmont, Moraga and Danville residents, they are the perfect auto-as-appliance buyers. Devotion/zealotry: the line is rather blurry, time to time. Kudos to the Big T says I. |

Replying to: wale_bate1 (Jan 23, 2007 8:09 am) Even in an alt universe, none of these people would be enthusiasts though, except one guy (married, one child) who goes everywhere with his eyes glued to the power direction monitor, and makes an "enthusiastic" challenge to himself with every drive to maximize electric-only propulsion. You wouldn't want to be behind this guy pulling away from stoplights, believe me - when I ride with him, sometimes I duck down so people driving by can't see me. Now I will say that the only two who are tracking mpg are doing better than 50, that none have had any problems with their cars, and that all would probably buy another if asked.
