Most intake systems have either vacuum lines or PCV lines routed through them and these systems would need consideration before making changes. Although the aftermarket intake systems look simple, flow rate calculations need to be done to ensure that the mass airflow sensor flow rate measurement is correct. An improper sensor reading might might result in increased emissions (ie you won't get it throught the DMV in your state) or reduced power. So the theoretical answer to your question is no. Injen and AEM have engineers design the system in an attempt to maximize power while minimizing emissions. A "hack job" may produce more power, however, it also may produce less power and in the extreme case result in engine damage.
