Cons
- Some controls are distracting to use while driving
- Bus-like seating position won't be to everyone's liking
- Tight rear legroom in the second and third rows
- Ponderous handling around tight turns
What's new
- Consolidation of trims from five to four
- LED headlights, heated steering wheel, heated front seats now standard on all trims
- Part of the fifth Discovery generation introduced for 2017
Overview
As a seven-passenger luxury SUV that fits into the midsize category, the Discovery comes with some innate benefits and drawbacks. Trying to jam seven seats into a vehicle this size is no easy feat and the Discovery suffers from a case of tiny-third-row-itis just like many of its direct competitors. Though Land Rover has tried to update the Disco's tech — a new infotainment and nav system arrived in 2021 — it is among the oldest vehicles in the class (it was last redesigned for 2017). And it still lacks some tech features that competitors offer, such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Edmunds spotlight: Still luxurious, still capable
Despite some inherent shortcomings, the Discovery remains an opulent and exceptional luxury SUV in many ways. Its leather and aluminum trim gives the interior a splendor that's not present in every SUV in the category. And there's no denying that its rounded edges and balanced proportions lend this SUV a distinctive, upscale presence. In other words, no matter how you experience the Discovery, its luxury appeal is undeniable. And its available two-speed transfer case and powerful V6 provide real off-road and towing capability, improving its overall versatility relative to many competitors.
Competitors to consider
The Discovery's direct competitors include the Acura MDX, Audi Q7 and Lincoln Aviator, all of which offer three rows of seating in a footprint that's not as big as a house. You may also consider the Cadillac XT6 if you want something from the home team that offers sharp road manners and modern tech.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
7.5/10
How does the Discovery drive? Expect competent but unexciting performance. The Discovery we tested had the six-cylinder engine, and at our test track it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. That's a bit off the pace of rivals such as the Audi Q7. The Discovery doesn't leap off the line when you mash the gas, but there's plenty of smooth midrange power to make passing on the highway a breeze.
Numerous aspects compound to make the Discovery feel bigger than it is, starting with the ponderous handling. The center of gravity feels quite high, so the Disco leans noticeably when you drive through tight turns.
You do get plenty of off-road capability with the Discovery, though. It has a maximum ground clearance of 11.1 inches, which is quite high for a three-row SUV, plus multiple traction modes and an available two-speed transfer case to help you make your way over rocks and ruts.

Comfort
8.0/10
How comfortable is the Discovery? The Discovery is comfortable overall. The first two rows of seats feature nicely shaped seats that hold up after hours of driving, even though they don't have much thigh support. The interior is impressively quiet, and the climate control system works well to heat or cool to your liking. One downside we noticed: The Discovery's standard air suspension can produce a mildly floaty ride at times.

Interior
6.5/10
How’s the interior? We'll start by saying that the new infotainment system is much easier to use than the Discovery's previous interface. Also, the climate system is neat in that you can control fan temperature, fan speed and seat heating/ventilation with a single knob. Front and side visibility is also quite good.
But … there are a lot of buts. Land Rover really needs to hire some people from Toyota and Honda for the next Discovery in hopes of coming up with better controls and ergonomics. Here's our list: 1) The haptic touch climate panel requires too much of your attention to use while driving; 2) The armrest snaps shut with the speed of a guillotine; 3) It's shockingly difficult to operate the upper glovebox; 4) There's also no quick release for moving the second row forward, so third-row passengers are almost entirely dependent on someone else to help them exit; 5) The driver's seat sits up way too high, giving the Discovery an almost bus-like driving position; 6) The second and third rows don't have enough legroom for a vehicle in this class; and 7) The large rear headrests are huge obstructions for looking out the back of the vehicle.

Technology
8.0/10
How’s the tech? The optional Meridian sound system is worth a purchase — there's good punch and clarity, and songs that can produce unwanted vibrations or noises in less able systems are reproduced faithfully here. The navigation system is not without its quirks (the predictive text algorithm makes some particularly odd choices) but is otherwise fairly intuitive. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity is standard, and there are many USB ports sprinkled throughout the cabin. The Discovery also has an impressive array of standard advanced safety features, including a 360-degree camera and lane keeping assistance.
Storage
8.5/10
How’s the storage? The Discovery's dual load door is quite nice, with the short bottom portion ensuring your groceries won't roll out when you park on your driveway incline. Unfortunately, the amount of cargo room behind the third row is laughable. With the third-row seats lowered, you'll find that the Discovery offers, thankfully, a bit more capacity than most rivals. The same goes for lowering the second row. Storage for small items is generous, with big door pockets and a sizable underarm bin up front. There's even a small cubby behind the climate panel.
If you plan on towing, know that the Discovery has a higher capacity than most other midsize three-row luxury SUVs. Properly equipped, it's rated to tow up to 8,200 pounds.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The Discovery with the turbocharged six-cylinder engine gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined (19 city/25 highway). In our real-world testing, the Discovery returned 21.7 mpg, which is comparable to the test results we got for the Audi Q7 (21 mpg) and BMW X5 (21.5 mpg).
Value
7.5/10
Is the Discovery a good value? The Discovery is appropriately priced for a midsize luxury SUV. The Land Rover's interior materials are top-notch, and we noted no squeaks or rattles during our test. Land Rover's warranty coverage is unremarkable, with bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage for four years/50,000 miles. The same goes for roadside assistance. Many rivals are more generous. Land Rover also does not offer complimentary maintenance.
Wildcard
7.5/10
The ponderous handling saps some of the fun you could have in the Discovery, but if you're plowing straight ahead, this big crossover is perfectly pleasant. The six-cylinder powertrain is a gem, even if it doesn't hustle this lug to the same extent as rivals. The Discovery is a looker inside and out, and Land Rover has done a great job making this aging SUV feel fresh from behind the wheel.
Which Discovery does Edmunds recommend?
Unless you plan to tow or do some serious off-roading, the P300S base trim is our recommendation. It doesn't get the more powerful turbocharged six-cylinder of the upper trims, but it's absolutely loaded with standard equipment and comes with all the features found on the next trim up, the P300 Dynamic SE, except the 21-inch wheels. You'll also sacrifice some option package availability with the base trim, but we think it's worth it.
Land Rover Discovery models
The 2024 Land Rover Discovery is offered in four trim levels: P300S, P300 Dynamic SE, P360 Dynamic SE and the Metropolitan Edition.
Two engine choices are available depending on the trim level you pick: a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 296 horsepower and a turbocharged inline six-cylinder with a mild hybrid system that's good for 355 hp. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic are standard across the range. The Discovery seats seven people in its three rows. Standard and optional feature highlights include:

2018 Land Rover Discovery HSE Td6 4dr SUV 4WD (3.0L 6cyl Turbodiesel 8A)
We've owned Land Rover products for nearly 20 years, and 5 years ago we left for Toyota (we purchased a 4runner and a Lexus SUV) because the frustrations of owning a Land Rover were interrupting our life (the service manager and Land Rover and I used to joke, that I should park the cars at the dealership, because they spent more time in the shop than in my garage). After, NEVER having … any issues with Toyota or Lexus for 4-years, we made the decision to go back to Land Rover and give the company the benefit of the doubt and purchased a 2018 Discovery (new from dealer) and 2018 Range Rover Sport (new from dealer) and both in cash. So, after racking up 7,000 miles and 5 months, the Discovery has been in the shop 18 days, major brake issues (sticking), software issues, and AEB issues. The Range Rover Sport is having the brake issues and software issues and has enjoyed about 8 days in the shop. We have serious mixed emotions, the Land Rover products are awesome in the snow, off-road and as daily haulers. But, once again I am sitting on two vehicles that have lost a significant amount of their value and I'm back and forth to the service facility. The Dealership has been super responsive and helpful while the work on a DFT (Dealer Facilitated Trade) for the Discovery (but no promises). Moral of our story will be to drive these for another 3 years, and trade them in for Ford, Toyota (Lexus) or Jeep. The moral of the story for you is simple, don't buy a Land Rover product, this is our recommendation after driving them on/off for 20-years.
Don't ever buy a Land Rover

2018 Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury Td6 4dr SUV 4WD (3.0L 6cyl Turbodiesel 8A)
We bought a brand new 2018 car from Land Rover. Within 30 days it was in the shop for repair. Over the next 90 days it was sent back for repair 5 more times. They told us it was a factory defect, and then over the next 3 months we were given a old, used, late model Land Rover while they came up with some "options" for us. All while we continued to make monthly payments on a $92,000 car. … They finally got back to us and informed us that we could accept a lesser vehicle then we had purchased. Upon hearing this news, we simply asked to get out of the deal. They then said we would have to pay nearly $5,000 to get out of the deal. This seems insane to me so I contacted the corporate office and they told us "that's their policy". I am now paying $5000 to get out of this nightmare. From top to bottom Land Rover is a disgusting corporation, with terrible vehicles, and even worse customer service. I simply plead with anyone considering a Land Rover, that they hear my warning. DON'T BUY A LAND ROVER! Nn
Just dont do it! Worst auto purchase I have done.

2018 Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury 4dr SUV 4WD (3.0L 6cyl S/C 8A)
Problem after problem. After at least 15 visits to the dealer my interior computer is still not working correctly. If it dose its slow, unresponsive and just down right antiquated. I feel like Im driving an outdated Iphone that is no longer supported. After 2 years Im trying to trade it in and the resale value is very low. Your better off spending your money on another option.
Love my Disco!

2020 Land Rover Discovery HSE 4dr SUV 4WD (3.0L 6cyl S/C 8A)
I need to say I love the my Discovery HSE! The exterior is so different then what you see everyday on the road and that's a good thing. The interior is great, with soft touch materials and great feel/quality of the fabric and seats. The tech is great and I'm not sure why people complain about the load times of the display screen or ease of use as I find it to be the opposite.
The … handling is awesome and it feels like such a solid vehicle with plenty of power to get it moving with great visibility. It's hard to list all of my favorite features but one of them is the Disco lowers after shutting off for ease of departure and access which my wife appreciates.
I highly recommended doing a test drive to see for yourself!
