Valve bodies can get gummed up, or seals can dry up, yes.

Someone told me that additive cleaner can clean it, what do you think!

Well I'm not a big fan of additives, especially when I can't read the labels or research them. I'd also have to know what the transmission is doing exactly and whether the diagnosis is even correct.

Well hard to saywith no codes or testing--it could be so many different things. We can't diagnose a complex modern automatic transmission by internet unfortantely. That valve body isn't cheap, so I hope the shop will refund your money if they guess wrong and that they have a good reason for replacing it in the first place. They could be right--maybe they've seen this problem before---experience counts after all.

I have a 1988 Jag, the transmission suddenly stopped working, once it cools off it will work, is there anything I can check, can it be something other than bad trans.
Thanks

I had a similar problem with BMW some years back. BMW service wanted to replace the transmission (mucho dollaros!!!). When I took it to an auto transmission specialist it turned out to be gummed up valves in the valve block, all it took was a pressure clean of the block/valves (removed from the box of course) and new auto transmission fluid for a then total of about $100 to completely fix the problem.
