More than likely the instrument cluster is on it's way out. Ours is having the same problem. There is a place in Syracuse NY that will refurbish it for $125-175.
That beats the $300++ that the dealer will want for a rebuilt one.
The place is United Radio.
I hope this helps.

Just wanted to let you know I've had all the same problems as you. Can't sell or trade it without giving it away. It still runs and looks good but now I've got a noise in the motor. I've already spent out $2,000 in different repairs. Rex in Indiana.
#243 of 312 2004 Rainier Differential issue
Jan 07, 2013 (10:05 am)
I proudly bought one of these years ago with 24k on it. Almost right away we had noise in the front, we took it back time and time again, nothing found. Then we got the famous "locked up" or "getting hit in the rear" feeling. Take it in nothing, now of course the front differential is done, so my options at this point are to pay someone a crazy amount of money to fix it, or dump the vehicle. They are now selling for under $5k here by me, so $3500 to fix something is crazy. I am mad at the dealerships, they pass on fixing these things, and when the warranty all runs out the crap breaks and we get stuck. I have had the rear air pump replaced, and this thing wont stay up for more than an hour after shutting it off, never an issue until they "fixed" it. Did rear brakes just before differential went out, and backing plates are completely rusted away. And we have the issue with the pool on the floor from the clogged ac drain. So frustrated about all of this, this was almost a $43k vehicle when new. Now it is worth less than the cost to repair it, so many of us have had this exact same problem, sounds like a defect, yet we are all stuck. I am not sure what we are going to do, we wanted to trade this in but now it is worth almost nothing in its current state of use. I am not sure if I could do this repair, I have built engines, rears, transmissions, etc. But dont have a hoist and cant lift the motor in my garage if that really needs to happen. Anyone have any suggestions????
#244 of 312 Rainier Air Bag Suspension
Jan 21, 2013 (2:01 pm)
Noted that rear air bags need refilling regularly. I have diagnosis that both bags are leaking. in my 2004 Rainier CXL V8. Anyone had any experience with replacement cost. Parts were quoted at over $600.
Another thought was to replace air bags with springs. Any one dealt with this.

Hoping you all can help. I have an 06 with only 64,000 miles on it. In the past two weeks several things have started happening to it. In between second and third gear it starts to make a whinning noise, as well as when I stop it feels like someone is hitting me in the rear end. Took it to a shop (non dealer) and they could find nothing wrong with it, no codes etc. have not taken it to the dealer yet as we can not afford to many more repairs. Someone has mentioned the rear differentaial was locking up and possibly the transerfer case as well as the clutch plate? Does anyone know what the drive tran warrenty is on these? this car has been very well taking care of and now isn't worth what we owe on it! Feels like we stuck. Anyone have any luck getting gm to fix the issues?

I have had this car 3 years and loved it, up until about 2 months ago. I bought it used in 2009 at 59k and now have 141k on it and don't want to sell, but here is what is going on.
Until recently, it worked like a dream but last month the All wheel drive failed and the transmission guy charged me $1700 and now the rear differential failed for another $900. Can't keep dumping money into this so I guess I must sell. Are GM cars no longer made to last? I really wanted to get this to 200k at least. If a GM employee is listening, please help as I have driven GM cars since my first one in 1993 and am about to give up!
#247 of 312 air bag suspension
Jan 27, 2013 (12:31 pm)
just last week we had our rear air bags replaced after finding leaks. Now, they are not filling and releasing as needed and stuck very low. the pump is functionind (as checked by the accessory inflator). does anyone know if there is a sensor or something that needs to be recalibrated after installing new bags?

Have you been working with your dealership for these repairs, buickrainier1, or with an independent shop?

#249 of 312 So Many Problems!
Jan 29, 2013 (8:45 am)
I bought My Ranier new in 2004. It has had nothing but problems since it hit about 50,000 miles. My heated seat over heated and almost started on fire, I have had to replace at least 4 wheel bearings, radiator problems, air shocks went bad, driver door lock switch had to be replaced because I couldn't close it (latch problem) and now my AWD is not working. I have sunk literally thousands of dollars into this piece of crap and things just keep going wrong. There is a reason GM is in financial trouble. In spring I will be looking at new Fords. We have always been a Buick family but I have had enough. The people at GM pretend they care, but they don't. What's even worse is the problems I have had with this thing is that most of the problems are just plain dangerous.
I am on vacation this week and today I have to take my truck to a dealer I have never been to in the area I am vacationing in so I don't keep getting stuck in the snow! Can't wait to see what they are going to hit me for this. Nope, Never again and I tell everyone I know, and plenty of people I don't know NEVER buy GM. My mom who has always had Chevy's even switched to Ford. GM... You are doing a wonderful job of putting yourselves out of business.
#250 of 312 Rainier Oil pan
Feb 03, 2013 (7:18 am)
Trying to replace an oil pump on a 2006 2-wheel drive Rainier with a 5.3l engine and cannot get the oil pan off. Removed one cross member towards the rear of the pan and all bolts. Pan lowered a few inches easily but now sits on a cross member and the steering gear cross member. Pan will not move forward enough to come out. Repair manuals do not say to remove the steering gear cross member or the second cross member (second steel cross member appears to be welded in place). Anybody know if I need to disconnect the engine mounting bolts and raise the engine to get this pan out? Can I work it out with removal of only the steering gear?
