observations of fuel economy and more by cehe4ka

OK, I got my SX4 Sport Auto just over a month ago and already have 2100 miles on it.

Driving 80% heavy suburbia with lots of lights and hills and 20% of traffic prone highways.

Currently showing 22.3mpg average, but I have reset that and did not go on highway since.

Snow storm traffic: 17 mpg - stop and go, AWD actually working all the time, speeds 5-25mph

Highway going 55-65 - easily getting 30-32 mpg

Normal suburban traffic: 21-23mpg.

I read a few comparisons here and what can I tell. I am a 6 foot tall very broad shouldered fella and I tried: Fit, Versa, Mazda3, Kia Rio, and few others. SX4 is the roomiest, I used to drive Chrysler Concordes since 1998 and had no problem transitioning for the SX4.

The cars fuel economy is compromised by its huge frontal area, that is due to broad and tall stance. Also the AWD components do add to the weight of the car.

AWD system is seamless, but I drive mostly in FWD mode. I am used to it. Reason for it to have the FWD button is not to engage the rear wheels and differential, yes in Auto it puts 100% to front wheels, but the clutches are still powered up and spinning.

I thought about a Subaru, but I did not like the ergonomics and it feels smaller. Don't think that it gets that much of a better fuel economy.

Good information! Makes me glad I bought the Forester instead of the SX4. I'm getting low 20's in the city and mid to high 20's with highway driving. That includes a Yakima cargo rack and ski/bike attachment. Lowest mileage was towing my 700 lb. trailer on the highway... got 20 mpg.

Seems like the mileage of the SX4 is better than the Subaru for highway and about the same in city traffic.

I just passed 5K and averaged 26.8 mpg, 80% hwy driving in mostly AWD with the AT. It was great in the snow and I used the lock mode a few times also. Now that spring is here I have switched to FWD and am averaging 29.6 so far. As far as an AWD vehicle goes...I think that's great mileage! Since I am 6'5" and 210 pounds, I can't fit in most SUVs. I wish the SX4 had a bit more power for the hills but then the gas mileage would suffer. It's a trade off but overall I'm very happy.

I wonder if any owner had tested the same route with the switch on FWD and then test it again with switch on AUTO. What, if any, difference in mpg would there be?

sx-4 gets pretty decent mileage by mikedoolin

Bought the SX-4 last December and have about 3000 miles on it. Am getting about 25 mpg average city/hwy with the auto transmission, close to 30 on the highway, hardly any 4WD use even though we live in the snowbelt. The mileage has gradually been climbing. Maybe that is because the car is breaking in, maybe it is because the console display constantly reminds me to drive more efficiently. In either case this is pretty good mpg for a 4WD vehicle. I have a Chevy S10 ext cab 4WD stick shift PU and it gets about 16/21. I have no serious complaints about this car.

I wonder for the sx-4 what is the major factor in mpg? I ask because i have a 2004 chevy tracker Zr-2 (4-door) with a 2.5 V-6 engine,4 speed automatic. In all backroad "city" driving im getting 24.4 Mpg and this is with me being pretty hard on the gas pedal as i live in a very hilly area, i have to climb a small mountain summit almost everyday. Oh and the 24.4mpg i have been getting is with using the A/C. btw the 2.5 v-6 is a Suzuki engine. I have not done any Highway drive yet. Next month im taking the tracker on vacation to the beach, and i should be able to see how it will do on fuel with 3 people in the car and a/c running.

I have had my SX4 for a month now. Typically, on the road going 65 to 70, I get around 29mpg. If I have a mixture of town/hiway, it is about 24+. Occasionally I do some stop and go in town which is about 20. I don't think this is too bad for a AWD vehicle. I expect to do even better after the car gets broke in.

I would say it would have to get better. I just filled up today and with my 4-door tracker with a V-6 engine (4x4) with using the a/c the whole time in all city driving i got 24.2mpg I would say a 2.0 4 banger would have to get better mileage in the city! Maybe check your tires air pressure?

I am not really happy with the mileage. In the city 23.3, on the highway at speeds 65-75 the mileage is 26.4. And I drive very smoothly, use neutral when going down the slope.
I think this is pretty much for 2.0 liter, 4 cyl car.

At 9k I am averaging 30 mpg with 90% hwy at 70 mph in FWD mode. In AWD I did get less, about 26 mpg but it was winter then. I think 30 mpg is the best I can expect.
