The March issue of Car And Driver magazine has a short article on their time with the SX4.   They tested a 5 spd. -- and only got 22 mpg. Yikes. That's what I consistently get with my 2004 Suzuki Aerio SX AWD automatic with 2.3 liter engine. Replying to: bren (Feb 05, 2007 2:14 pm) They must have spent a lot of time doing acceleration and braking tests to get something that low. That's something that is often unclear in the magazine tests. Did they actually take the car on a mileage test loop, or just "run the heck out of it" for a couple days and then report the mileage for the entire test period? My wife has gotten 27+ MPG on her last two fill ups. This is for rural driving with some in town - hilly areas. Overall MPG for 1800 miles driven is 26.04 - base model with manual 5 speed, mostly in AWD mode.

Replying to: dudeboy (Feb 05, 2007 8:43 pm) i know what you mean these magazines make me wonder at times. even the epa stickers on the cars. sometimes they are right others they are way over what the car actaully gets ,but in my case (so far) they under estimated the mpg my tracker get. they said on the sticker and the websites i should go 18city 20 highway. so far in strictly city driving i am getting a hair under 24mpg this is from a 4 door V6 4x4 tracker. i havent even done highway driving yet. the 24 im getting now is also in the colder temps that we have been having. so i imagine if you live up north the sx4 will get even better mpg once the air temp goes up... Replying to: steve_ (Feb 27, 2007 2:43 pm) thanks for the links.. but WOW the newer epa estimate even says i should get LESS mpg than the sticker! they said 17city 20 highway..lol im getting 24 city. now in all fairness i am running proper air pressure in the tires and i recently replaced ALL oils with synthetic oil(s). so this might be a helpful. im just excited and curious to see how the mpg goes in warmer temps...

OK, I got my SX4 Sport Auto just over a month ago and already have 2100 miles on it.   Driving 80% heavy suburbia with lots of lights and hills and 20% of traffic prone highways.   Currently showing 22.3mpg average, but I have reset that and did not go on highway since.   Snow storm traffic: 17 mpg - stop and go, AWD actually working all the time, speeds 5-25mph   Highway going 55-65 - easily getting 30-32 mpg   Normal suburban traffic: 21-23mpg.   I read a few comparisons here and what can I tell. I am a 6 foot tall very broad shouldered fella and I tried: Fit, Versa, Mazda3, Kia Rio, and few others. SX4 is the roomiest, I used to drive Chrysler Concordes since 1998 and had no problem transitioning for the SX4.   The cars fuel economy is compromised by its huge frontal area, that is due to broad and tall stance. Also the AWD components do add to the weight of the car.   AWD system is seamless, but I drive mostly in FWD mode. I am used to it. Reason for it to have the FWD button is not to engage the rear wheels and differential, yes in Auto it puts 100% to front wheels, but the clutches are still powered up and spinning.   I thought about a Subaru, but I did not like the ergonomics and it feels smaller. Replying to: cehe4ka (Mar 15, 2007 11:23 am) Good information! Makes me glad I bought the Forester instead of the SX4. I'm getting low 20's in the city and mid to high 20's with highway driving. That includes a Yakima cargo rack and ski/bike attachment. Lowest mileage was towing my 700 lb. trailer on the highway... got 20 mpg.   Seems like the mileage of the SX4 is better than the Subaru for highway and about the same in city traffic.

I just passed 5K and averaged 26.8 mpg, 80% hwy driving in mostly AWD with the AT. It was great in the snow and I used the lock mode a few times also. Now that spring is here I have switched to FWD and am averaging 29.6 so far. As far as an AWD vehicle goes...I think that's great mileage! Since I am 6'5" and 210 pounds, I can't fit in most SUVs. I wish the SX4 had a bit more power for the hills but then the gas mileage would suffer. It's a trade off but overall I'm very happy.
