Replying to: yrbender (Nov 03, 2006 4:31 pm) Signed up for a 6-hour course, but it had been raining the whole week before I got there, so I was warned that "The trails are a little sloppy" the day lasted 10.5 hours... First part of the course was an artificial obstacle course, where the instructor evaluates your skills, and gives you direction on how to operate the vehicle controls, and how to drive over the different types of terrain. For us (My wife and I) that lasted about 2 hours - it would have gone quicker if there was just one driver, but since there were two of us, we did the course twice. After that, our instructor suggested we do the sand course to get a feel for that - the sand course also had river fording, and deep water driving. After that was lunch, followed by the real tough stuff. Since my wife and I had already gone to a few dealer events, we had a (what we thought) fairly good introduction to the LR3 V8, including vehicle controls, driving positions, trail knowledge, etc. The afternoon was supposed to be a 3-hour tour through the back woods - it turned into a 6-hour tour, as we had to winch over 5 times to make it through the course. The instructor told us they normally don't try to teach winching on a driver's first LR school experience, and he apologized. My wife and I were extatic. This was what we wanted to see - we knew the LR could go over tough obstacles, up and down steep cliffs, and ford through deep water, but what we really wanted to see was this thing getting stuck, and how to get it un-stuck. Needless to say, it was one of the most fun things we've ever done. Got lots of experience with our LR, and gained an almost awe-inducing respect for the vehicle we purchased. When were shopping, we were looking at several high-end vehicles: LR3 HSE Porsche Cayenne S Volvo XC90 V8 After going to the dealer events (and treated like royalty), and then the driving school, we have absolutely no regrets about buying the LR3 HSE. Even Porsche drivers look at our LR with envy, we notice. One of the things we were able to compare was the dealer event vs. the driving school. The driving school was much harder, and much more rewarding than the dealer event, but we felt that going to the dealer event first was a great preparation for the driving school, and we got that much more out of the driving school by skipping little details they would have spent on people with little-to-no experience. We especially liked how the driving school had no set curriculum, other than the obstacle course. After that, it was all custom for your level of experience. Replying to: yrbender (Nov 10, 2006 7:54 pm) I subscribe to LRM (Land Rove rMonthly) and they have tons of examples of winches that are much cheaper than the 4500 (CA$) they wanted plus installation. Anyways, winch will probably come at the same time as a brush bar and some extra lighting. /Da
